Default Dace...

Anybody else enjoy targetting Dace with the fly rod? On light gear they can be great fun and they eagerly take dries, my favourite being a 16's greenwells glory. I did fluke a rather large one recently, the damsel pattern was intended for trout, but i'm glad this monster beat the spotties to the fly

What with the rivers open again i'll be pestering the Dace again, along with everthing else that swims!

Cheers,

Graham

I'm not convinced. Looks a bit shallow set for it's length, and the Pecs look the right shape and colour for a dace.

That's a lot bigger dacer than any I used to get on fly at Chatsworth! Well done, there will be others there of similar size and status as they like each other's company.

I agree, I'm not an expert but looks like a Dace.

I recently read Hugh Sheringhams book 'An anglers hour', published 1905. In one of the chapters he talks passionately about fly fishing for Dace and recommends them as a summer target once the Mayfly season has passed. I am interested in having a go but I need to find some first.

Is it true they are very hard to hook as they rise, mouth and eject the fly very quickly ?

I have been told where I can find them on a free stretch of the Aire in Leeds but I haven't checked out the location yet.

Quite possibly the fastest taker of a dry fly you will ever come across they can drive you mad some days

Looks like a dace to me as well, body not quite deep enough for a roach and fins not red enough... but I've been wrong before...

There are quite a few dace in the Windrush and they can be very frustrating to fish for as they rise very readily to a dry but rarely make full contact.
