Default River Wye - Chubs?

Hi Guys

planning few trips in Wales this summer, was wandering if anyone knows a venue with rising chubs in the middle/lower Wye worth trying on the fly? Just to divert my attention to different species in the odd day

Any PM/advice is appreciated

cheers

Marco

Hello Marco,

I am not a regular flyfisher in Wales but have been there a good few times.
If you are only interested in Chub I cannot help. However, if you do not mind the mixed bag of all sorts then I would recommend Glasbury and Hay on Wye. If you wade downstream starting from the bridge in Glasbury (there is a Cafe Shop at the corner) that stretch is free and you can fish it for about a 3 miles downstream. Stick to the left bank facing downstream. There is a fishing shop in the centre of Hay on Wye where you can get ticket for the stretch which is upstream of the bridge in Hay on. That stretch is also good.

Best of luck!

Pete

thanks Pete.

Ernie, I have got the passport, I found interesting beats in there but they classify those waters as "coarse" with no indication on whether chubs (or others) are rising on the fly or taking nymphs easily, I was after a beat with right condition, gravel, water not too slow, not too deep or other condition who make chubs fishing attractive on the fly.

I take I am not the only desperate who may have tried this?

Thanks chaps

Hello Marco,

Come over to my part of the country and catch chub on the dry.
You do not need to go all the way to Wales
Those two beats I mentioned in my previous posts are all good and potentially hold good head of chub and all wadeable but it is not guaranteed that you will catch them on dry.

Good luck with your quest!

Pete

Help me on this? I rather avoid driving 3.5hours to Wales to catch decent chubs, what part of the country do ya mean?

I will certainly dedicate a day to those 2 beats if I am around for trout or grayling on higher beats. Thanks for the advice

You don't have to travel to Wales for Chub. The south east is full of good chub rivers.

There is virtually nowhere on the Wye below Builth Wells that does not have chub, in most places they are the predominant species and have been caught up to about 3.5kg but are not often fished for with the fly.
