Default Looking at a new Carp fishery but need clarification on rules, opinions please

Hi to all

This will probably sound like a totally stupid question but I'd like clarification on the rules of the place I'm looking at fishing.

Day Ticket Rules
Barbless Hooks Only
No Micro Barbs - WHAT ARE MICRO BARBS?
No Boilies, Hemp / Nuts or Pellets - ARE DOG BISCUITS CLASSED AS PELLETS? AND ARE THESE JUST ON THE HOOK OR CAN YOU USE THEM (boilies, nuts, hemp & dog biscuits) AS FEEDERS TO ATTRACT THE CARP?
No Keep Nets
7 am until Dusk
One Rod Only
You MUST have an unhooking mat
You MUST have a large landing net HOW LARGE IS LARGE?

Thanks in advance

Chalky

Hey Chalky, is this a wind up?

We can all start to answer these for sure, I'm sure you can as well - there are a few Carp fisher men on here ... nothing against them, some of my best friends are Carp fishermen but you might do better asking this on a less fly fishing orientated forum.

Ummm no it's not a wind up. I've fly fished for Carp at another place which allowed the use if dog biscuit flies (I'm pretty sure this is a fly fishing forum). Re clarification on rules I'm just asking if dog biscuits are classed as pellets as it doesn't state "No dog biscuits" and re the size of landing nets, I've seen some huge carp nets in the local tackle shop so I'm after actual diameters rather then "large landing net" which is open to opinion. If I could answer them definativy as opposed to best guess I wouldn't have posted in the first place.

Ok, thanks for that. What may be obvious to some isn't always obvious to others, especially newbies. Hopefully someone will see that I'm relatively new to this and won't be so condescending.

Oh Chalky, what a demonstrative thing to say, what is 'one' to do with you?

I can offer you an opinion but the expertise on the finite answer is most likely not on this forum and perhaps should be directed to the fishery itself, a courteous phone call to the owners / manager is perhaps the best path to a definitive answer and I presume might mean a discussion with he / she / them on how you intend to fish there, if they are unused to fly fishermen that is (?). Even if they are used to fly fishermen, then it's their shooting match and they are the only ones you need please.

I don't joke about Carp fishermen being friends, I have an opportunity to fish a carp pond near here with a committee member who has just got into fly fishing, what I do know is there are debates in their fishery / club re methods of fishing and ease of access / level of stocking etc, as in many fishery / fishing club scenarios.

So:

Dog biscuits / flies - perhaps agree definition of what is appropriate with the fishery.
Microbarb - small barbs, either on the particular hook type or arguably left by debarbing a barbed hook; I personally have not yet had a debate here re the efficiency of debarbing methods but it is bound to have been covered (?).
Define a 'Large Net' - perhaps agree definition of what is appropriate with the fishery as the world's yer lobster with this one.

Alas unfortunay I've not been able to get hold of them on the phone but I have been told they allow fly fishing. Trouble is I want to take my nephew next week during half term, hence the reason I need to find out these details before turning up, so that I'm properly kitted out. And thanks for your take on things. I will (if I can get hold of them) clarify the use of dog biscuits both as a feeder and as a fly.

You see, the debate I'm having with my buddy is what the Carp, whether wild(ish) or not, would take naturally?

Hope this helps:
Micro barbs are small barbs instead of a larger one with is slightly less damaging than a normal one aparantly but I always fish barbless, Basically if your hook has a barb you cant use it unless you crush it down so the hook becomes barbless.

Dog biscuits is a hard one some may see as a pellet, doesnt it say no floating baits? You may be better calling up the fishery or warden if possible.

An unhooking matt, is a soft matt used to protect the fish if it thrashes about on the bank, its important to wet it before placing a fish on it.

Net size I use a 36" landing net as I find it big enough for the carp I catch with fly fishing, but also I take my younger brother carp fishing as that is what he enjoys and we find that size big enough. Although there is a fishery we go to that wont let you fish the specimen pool (fish over 20lb and up to 50lb) with out a 42" net but as far as im concered 36" is easily big enough.

John.
