Default First Carp on the fly

Well today I went fly fishing fir carp for the very first time. I had loads of bites and managed to hook three of which I landed two. Not the best record but carp fishing is totally alien to me. Anyhow it only cost me £5 for about three hours of catch and release. Am deffo going to do this again.

1 picture only I'm afraid (will post later) in was fishing off dog biscuit flies and putting out small handfuls of dog biscuits which the carp seemed to love. The venue was called Lake View Introducing Lake View Fisheries which is based just outside of Crawley near Gatwick. Really nice place and the bailiffs were very helpful (told me where to fish and how to do it).

Really chuffed to bits

Went again today and managed to land two more (although I missed a lot of takes). I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to play a Carp properly as opposed to playing a Trout? Would be much appreciated

Cheers

Chalky

Chalky,

Nice fish...I remember my first carp which was only a 3lb grass carp caught on a dry fly accidentally in South Africa whilst trying to tempt some trout in a dam.

My second one ever in holland was a 22lb beast though

For playing carp, their first run/explosion is normally the most powerful and it's during that that I let them go if they want and only pressure them if they are heading for snags etc. After that I normally think they are quite well behaved lumps compared to sea trout...the big ones however just hang on and enjoy the work out.

Lakeview Fishery was the birthplace of the "Ginger Minger" fishing from the bridge its had Carp to 16lbs Success of the ?Ginger Minger?

I agree with Ed that the first run is usually the strongest, I never use a leader less than 10lb copolymer and always fish barbless.

Hi Carpflier,
I dont I'm afraid, I gave the samples to Fulling Mill who now do the "Close copy dog Biscuit"
They are tied with Ginger Brown Deer Hair from Lakeland Flytying.
