Default Carp Advice Please.

Hi All,
I am thinking of giving the carp a go in a couple of weeks time.
What tackle set-up would you advise?
Can anyone suggest some relatively easy to tie flies as my tying skills aren't brilliant but I get by.
Colin

My Carp fishing is opportunistic. The reason being, one of my local still waters have a mixed lake. I'll go after them when they are feeding on the surface. In terms of rod and line, anything you like. I've caught carp on #7 and 4#. It's great sport. Best fly I've found for this is a Dog Biscuit

Oh, and beef up your tippet, you can get some real brutes.
Target rich environment

Thanks Eddie,

Do you have to worry about sinking your leader?

A bit of mud on the last 18" of the tippet is good enough. They don't seem to be as spooky as trout, IMHO..
Good Luck

Hi

I fish two or three times a week for carp in Oxfordshire. I buy a budget packet of dog pellets from Tesco. I try buy something that is around ten mm dia.
I buy dog biscuit flies from Fulling mill as they seem to float the longest.
Tackle wise- a 6 weight greys rod with matching floating fly line, 12 foot of 6lb flouro with a dog biscuit fly.
What I do is, find an area that seems pretty calm, wind wise, get 10-20 pellets out.I try keep the pellets in the same area, so feeding the same area. The fish will come to you. Once I've got pellets out then I only start to get my rod ready.
This works mainly late afternoon but I was hooking fish this last Sat at lunch time so....

Have fun, any other info, feel free to contact me.

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the advice.

Where I will be going they don't allow dog biscuits.
That's not to say I can't use an artificial, as the manager there told me they readily feed on the top anyway.

Cheers
Colin

I have had success with a foam headed hares ear emerger. Seem to prefer the bigger flies though size 10-12 did me well a few weeks ago plonked in fron of feeding fish.

I use an #8 rod, floating line and 10lb leader, I have gone back to Copolymer as its a gnats thinner than fluorocarbon. One small tip is first you fire out a few biscuits to get the carp going, then cast out your "fly" then put out more biscuits around the fly but remember to leave some slack line if you lay your rod down while catapulting out biscuits. The reason being that carp will be conditioned to taking biscuits quickly once they hit the water so if your fly is there already you will get more takes. Another thing is if your fire out your biscuits HIGH in the air they land with more of a plop which really gets the carp interested. If you tie your own flies look here : Success of the ?Ginger Minger?

Use Sweetcorn if they dont allow dog biscuits and a yellow fly, or bread and white fly, they both work.

Good luck
