Default Another F & C "Pikelet"

Hi Guys

Last Saturday i had another bash at the Perch in the Forth and Clyde canal again i was targetting them with my 9' 3wt

How ever this time instead of my pink wriggler i was trying a sparkler clouser and a bulky sparkler lure with both with chain eyes and both tied on B175 size 6 !

Well second cast from a lock gate across to the far bank over deep water resulted in a really hard "thump" as the fly left the drop off heading out into the deep water. The little rod thumped away cracking fight as the fish crash dived for the bottom at first i thought it was a nice Perch as the hit and ensuing fight didnt feel particularly pike like ?

However in the gin clear water i could just make out a nice little 13"-15" pike head down tail up going like stink for the bottom the bend in the 3wt was superb ! These small pike are really over gunned with a 5wt but are very sporting on a 3wt !

I was rather concerned as fishing for perch i had no trace however i was pleased to find the Clouser which of course fishes upside down had punched through the top lip and he could bite for all he was worth but a size 6 B175 is a tough hook.

As you can see he really nailed the sparkler !

Heres another pic of him, not sure if you can see but he had old damage to his flank just above the anal fin. He was safely returned.........................

I fished for another hour or so will no other takes ...........until i changed to the bulky sparkler, cast it let it sink right down and fig 8 retrieve, kicking it from time to time, to my joy a cracking 10" perch followed it right in but turned away Perhaps next time !

Well done Englander those little jacks fight well on light gear! I have caught a few on dog nobblers when fishing for perch and surprisingly I have not been bitten off either it just depends were they are hooked. You just dont know which fish will take your fly next.
