Default Carp and more carp

Hi all I went to Borwick fishery near Carnforth on Sunday afternoon arriving about 15:30. The place was busy it being such a lovely day. People seemed to be struggling to catch but they were all fishing on the bottom.

Deer hair dog biscuit fly tied on I cast to some rolling carp..... Fish on

Some 20 or more carp later and now everyone fishing as close to me as they could get even to the extent of casting method feeders in front of me I decided to move.

Now they have some ornamental pools so I thought I would try those. Brilliant fun catching 4lb ghosties and kois.

Some 30 fish late I called it a day with aching arms.

Great fun best carp reaching double figures.

Novice.

I've always found that fly fishing for carp is great fun, especially off the top.

Did you throw a few dog buscuits in to get them eating confidently first?

Tied some new flies from deer hair over the winter, can't wait to give them a go soon.

I threw some freebies in a first but it only made it more difficult to catch. I found it better to just give them one choice, my fly.

I just kept casting to any fish that where taking something off the top.

These dog biscuits, where to get them and which ones, just came back from some supermarkets but there are so many kinds and none of them look like the flies people tie for them, some look like bones some are all shapes and colours the internet is no help either!

Just go with normal chum mixers. They're not meant to imitate the fly exactly, just to get the carp up on the surface and feeding.

Ok thanks so the fly is just to look like something edible floating in the surface film and the chum is to get them up and feeding?

Correct - you don't even need a dog biscuit fly. Any dry fly with a bushy profile will work

Would you say that carp don't get fixed on one kind of food like trout sometimes do ignoring all else? I get the idea they are more likely to try something that looks interesting than trout are? I hope to try for carp for the first time next week and am soaking up any info about them now.

They can get hooked on a particular bait if the water has a baiting campaign (a lot of the big carp waters will have everyone piling a certain bait in and the carp will be so fixated on it that they ignore any other bait), but for most commercial UK fisheries this won't be a problem and you should have good success with the fly. May also be worth trying Klinkhamers to fish in the surface film

Thanks good idea I was wondering about nymphs and buzzers in the surface film I get the idea they like finding food in the film rather than sitting on top like trout.
