Default Favorite flies for Pike

Hi,

Just wanted to know what your favorite pike flies are?

My experience with pike fishing on the fly has been a bit limited, but i have caught a few on zonkers, with white or black being the best colours.

Would love to catch one on a surface fly though

Hi,
They were hammering a white and orange rabbit fur fly the other week but im pretty sure that anything big that passes within their striking distance would get hit.
I know Trout are very partial to a Black/Orange clouser.
Good luck.
Simon

Over the years I have kept notes as to which flies I have caught my pike on. I have caught more on predominantly orange (orange, orange/yellow or orange/black) than all the other colours put together. These are notes kept over 18 years of fishing for pike with a fly rod.
Next most successful colour is white with red.
My biggest fish came to pink/white (which is, in effect red/white isn't it!)
Green or perchy type colours work on some waters and won't take a fish on others. Some scientific research in Germany as to predation habots showed that pike will take perch, but only if they have to! As in, if there are softer baitfish present they take them first.
Pike introduced to pools containing ONLY perch as prey grew much slower than pike from the same hatching that had soft baitfsh to eat (roach, rudd, carp). If a pike hits a perch colour it hits it hard, but I think they would rather have a small carp if they can...which might point to why my results with the orange fly come so good - plus it shows up in coloured water! If there is a bit of colour in the water I always go to orange first. Just me...size wise. I have caught plenty of big fish (20lbs or knocking) on flies around 5" or 6" and I don't use huge flies much anynmore. Occassionally, if I am in the mind to try for a monster I will put a 12" fly on, thrash it about for a while, then go back to easier fishing!

I only fish rivers for Pike, where their main diet are Bleak, Dace and Roach. Therefore most of my flies are white or grey with varying degrees of sparkle tied into them, as Tailing loop as said White with a red head is also a favourite but sometimes i wonder if it's a case of whatever fly was on at the time was going to get hit, although i'm sure the red wouldn't put fish off over a plain white/grey fly...

My standard pattern(at the moment) has a zonker tail with the rest tied of synthetics giving bulk, they're also mostly leaded, again it's needed in the flow on rivers, plus a little jiggy action is no bad thing

I also tie it short in the summer and add a popper head, awesome fishing on a low river early in the morning and late in the evening

I've never been one for tying shocking coloured flies like the oranges etc, but that's just me, they do work and who really knows what they look like to the Pike eh?....

Hi John

Thanks for the link, interesting reading and a nice picture of the mouse fly.

Im sure surface fishing with this fly would be a very exciting method to catch pike.

Does it have a good success rate compared to some of the other flies you recommend on your site or is it just your favorite fly to fish with?

Hi Joey1,

Those flies look absolutely stunning. Are they difficult to cast when wet?

I would love to learn how to tie them flies, i dont suppose you have any step by step instuctions or know anywhere i can buy some from?
