Default Teacher to show me how to unhook pike?

I have caught pike in the past on lures/spinning. I am always careful when unhooking them.

I am too scared to hold the fish in their gill rakes and am wanting someone to show me how its done. Then I will have more experience in unhooking the fish.

I'm from Keighley, West Yorkshire and I am in two angling clubs, Bradford City and Bradford No1 AA.

It's all about confidence. You don't hold the pike by the gill rakes, this could kill it.
You follow the gill cover and hold the pike near bottom jaw bone, easier to see than explain.

Drop me a pm and I will try to talk you through it, or get in touch with the Pike Anglers club and they will send you a leaflet on how to safely unhook a pike, better still have a day out with an experienced Pike Angler and learn from them

Chris

You could try emailing your local Pike Anglers Club representative to see if they are running any teach-ins;

Not going to bother trying to explain , as has been said , best to be shown , but what I will say is fair play to ya for asking for help and for someone to show you

I bet there are loads of people who just take up fishing for Pike on a whim and then find they are in trouble once a Pike is on the bank or in the boat etc etc ...

As said....confidence,which can take a knock when the fish thrashes around a bit and makes a bee line for your hand.
It'll flap about for a split second and settle down, which is scary, then you have your moment to over come the odds.
I have made some errors with the pike especially when they are deep hooked or the fly is stuck in their gills, they are quick fish that whack that fly down pretty quick.
Good luck and keep us posted
Simon

Thank you for the replies guys. I've been reading the pdf file on the pacb website and I'll see how I get on at removing the hooks.

Just remember if the fish is deep hooked and in the gills you are often better off to pull the fly/hook all the way out through the gill cover using forceps , remove the fly or hook and then it is just a simple case of gently pulling the trace back out of the mouth , simples .

Gilling a fish is quite safe providing you don't put your fingers in too deep. If you just follow the gill cover your fingers will stay clear of those 700 teeth!

here is a picture that might help, not a bg fish, but ti shows how you stay clear of trouble.

Funny, I have never had a pike take a fly deep, they are always hooked in the jaw or close by.

The fly is quite clearly visible in the jaw.

If you are fly fishing for pike it is worth joining the Pike Fly Fishing Association. It is only £10 a year. You'll get that back in fishing invites to private waters that you cannot buy fishing on.
