Default Pike today

At last the ice is gone and managed to get out for some air and a wee bit of fishing .

Freezing fog till 1 pm and surface water temp of 2 c thought would be a blank but had a couple of nice Jacks ...

I know I got an iffy hold of the fish in one of the pictures but it was actually facing the other way to start with and had a hissy fit So just grabbed a snap as it was to save pricking about in order to get it straight back ...

Some full on action here that my mate put on utube

Cheers

Very Well done Danny thats good stuff just getting out there and making the film mate ...

But The big ones will come mate and when they do you'll be finished with the trout fishing?...At the very least You'll never cast another trout rod with the same passion again that's for sure... The big ones are just like drugs you keep needing more & more lol

So his buddy asks "If you get so excited about big pike fishing why do you even bother to go trout fishing" he replies "it's hard at first and then I remember.... Trying to match the insect which does not happen in pike fishing.
Also the delicate effortless casts with a light weight rod and line to put my dry fly precisely in front of the trout and the big fight on a mid action 3/4 weight rod with a 2 or 3lb trout on a 2lb tippet"

Cheers Wilkie , I have had more 20's than I can remember over the years BUT not one on the fly yet .. Really looking forward to that moment . Yes I know they will come and it shouldn't be to long away ( I hope ) as the venues I am fishing hold good head of the big girls .
As for giving up Trout ?? Nah it wont happen although I know where you are coming from , but I catch big trout but am still happy to then go and catch a few little roach on the fly . So think it will be the same with the Pike , yes great to have the arm pulled off once in a while but will still like going down the river and creeping about for the wee spotty lads , or throwing some fluff for any other species for that matter ....

Good to see you are taking a few fish. Whereabouts are you based?
I've been targeting the pike over the past season or two and had limited success with no big fish... I think i'm getting closer and hope that this season i will crack it... Funny enough my first ever pike on the fly was a 20 pound fish, on my first ever evening flyfishing for pike about 10 years ago and haven't been able to match it since, even though i'm putting in the effort this past season.. beginners luck i suppose.. Looking forward to the coming season..

Cheers
JJ

I know what your are saying mate but for me it's when you get a big 20 chasing your fly towards the boat like a "big submarine"... missing it two or three times and when you "hang" your fly it just grabs it near ripping the line out your hand...." Just as good as sex " for me mate lol .

Enjoy the journey anyway Danny
