Default Leader set-up for Pike + flies

I have fly fished for pike a few times with my 9' 7-8w trout rod. I know that some of you might screw your nose up when I said 'trout rod'. But after catching but losing a fish of around 10lb on a local reservoir, I'm sure it would be ok.

I used my 8weight saltwater fly line with an 8' 20lb leader connected to Tyger Wire to act as a trace (can't remember what lb the wire was). I'm wondering what the best set-up would be?

Also flies?

I have some Ad Swier Pike hooks which I have hardly used. Its about time I used them.

Sounds ok so far, If I was using an 8wt I would use a fly tied sparse. Fulling mill do some nice flies for pike now. To attach the fly to the wire I use these, have been using them for 3yrs now with no problems...

Fishing with a stronger rod say a 10wt is better for the pike as you can get them in quicker rarther than sitting there playing them longer with a weaker rod. No expert but i know that mate!

Thanks for the links.

I'm interested in tying a few simple pike flies with some Ad Swier hooks. What would you guys and girls suggest?

I will be fishing rivers mostly with the occasional session on a small tarn.

ad sweir hooks are a great job, you'll hook up better with them. Google "dodd's 3d dodger", they are pretty easy to tie and produce the goods. Given your rod, tie them sparse to aid casting. Also with a softer rod you should consider line striking, helps set the hook in a pike's boney mouth, a softer rod can fail to do this with a traditional strike.

Hi,
I´m using simple bait fish patterns tied from synthetics (Mirror Image, Slinky Fibre or Slinky Blend). Fish like them and casting with 8 wt is easy.
