Default Bury Hill Pike/Zander

Hi has anyone fished bury hill for pike from a punt. Thinking of a trip soon. Can the punts be hired for one person or is there a limit on them. And has anyone had a zander there on the fly, if so what would be the best pattern. Thanks Steve.

Not fished there for many years and wouldn't go back, because i found the staff rude and uninterested in helping or giving info. Its altered a lot since the 'old days'lots of bank space opened up and what is described as the jungle also totally opened up,basically i feel to get more anglers and more dosh. Not so sure that they would allow fly fishing there!.Used to pike fish it a lot.Certainly a good head of zander.

I went flyfishing for predators on buryhill last year on one of their punts however the water colour was really bad at the time so was wasteing my time. Would definatley be worth a go depending on what the water visabilty is like.

The punts can be rented by one or two persons , however as stated above due to the head of carp in the lake the water is normally coloured and tough for fly fishing.

I personally wouldn't like to land and unhook a pike in a punt or canoe.
I had a similar conversation with a couple of yahoo's on a canoe forum (who clearly had never caught a pike before).
They didn't have a clue.

I'm not saying it can't be done by someone with a lot of experience of unhooking pike properly BTW.

Got to disagree with you on unhooking a pike in a flat-bottomed stable punt. As easy as on the bank. As long as you've got an unhooking mat for the bottom of the punt it should be pretty easy.

A small pike in a canoe/kayak should be relatively easy as well ... now one of the bigger girls ... that would be challenging!

That's my point really. What's to say you're not going to hook a 20 or bigger?

Some of the lads on the PFFA seem to manage it ok.

I know - see my prev post. What I'm saying is that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. I've caught pike, but I'm not experienced enough to feel happy unhooking a big girl in a canoe or punt.

Punts at Bury Hill are really quite big, should have no problem unhooking pike in them as long as you know what you are doing with the spiky end.
