Default What decent pike line for a #9 rod

Hello All and a Happy New Year

I have procured myself a #9 rod (Orvis Traveller) that I intend to use for Pike.

Now, although I have two #9 lines that I tried out on an Airflow rod, I found the whole thing rather slow, sluggish and just dont have a good feel.

Is it preferential to use a specific Pike line or would an avr WF9 suffice?

Awaiting your erudite responses!!

Ben

Default rio

I use Rio's WF9F Pike line and like it very much coupled with a Loomis NativeRun GLX 9'6" 9wt.

How big are the flies your casting. When I,m casting flies over 5" I use the rio outbound lines on my 9wt. A lot of people I fish with use a 10wt line on there 9wt rods. Try using lines with sorter heads and ones that are designed for casting pike fies. Normal fly lines can,t cope with the extra wieght from the pike flies. Hope this helps

Sorry to be the bearer of potentially bad tidings but that's pretty much the best feel you may get from casting a 9wt with a budgie.
I've tried a few different combinations of 9wt rods and lines, including 'specialist' pike tapers' and where I have found some better than others chucking a big fly is never going to anything other than a bit ugly of your used to flicking a size 18 dry on a 3wt.
Best combination I have managed so far is a mid action rod with a fairly aggressive front taper line (Rio MainStream Pike) and a 'slow but authoritative and open' casting style.
