Default SBS Pike Fly Leader

Quite a few people have asked me the best way to use AFW Micro Supreme wire to make leaders suitable for fly fishing for Pike and other sharp toothed fish.

So i hope this SBS is clear enough for people to follow.

Because i needed to take some pictures of made up leaders for http://www.flyforums.co.uk/charity-e...on-thread.html i thought i would take the pictures needed for this SBS.

1, Take a spool of your chosen leader material be it a tapered leader or a spool of Nylon, Co-Polymer or Fluorocarbon and tie in a perfection loop to the end.
I cut the tag off with a scalpel to leave a clean knot.
I have used Orvis Super Strong 20lb Co-Polymer for this sbs but just use the brand you have confidence in.

2, Measure off the length of leader you want to use.
I mainly make up a Pike leader to be a length between 7 1/2ft and 9ft + the wire tippet.
I find that this length of leader to be the best overall.

3, Select the knottable wire that you want to use for the bite proof tippet ( imho by far the best wire to use is American Fishing Wire Surflon Supreme).
Measure off a minimum of 12" of wire and put an over hand knot in one end.
I have used AFW Micro Supreme 26lb wire which gives the right amount of flexibility, strength, thinness and durability to make a great Pike leader.

4, Insert the leader material through the knot in the wire and make a 6 turn uni knot around the wire tippet moisten and tighten.
Before you reach the loose over hand knot tighten it and bed the two knots together.

5, Trim off the tags as close as you can and if you want yo can leave it at that.
I like to put on a tiny drop of Bug Bond Lite letting the Bug Bond move around the knot and smoothing over it.
I think its adds strength and gives a more durable finish.

I hope you have found the SBS easy to follow.
I don't put any sort of clip on to my wire tippet preferring to tie the fly directly on to the wire by using a Davy knot or using a perfection loop (if you do use a perfection loop then make the wire tippet length 18")
I am testing a couple of clips and when i have decided if any are up to the job i will add to this SBS.

Thankyou Toby,
Is it better to do this in a nice warm lounge at home or shivering, teeth juddering, aching frozen fingers on the river bank.
Cheers
Simon

Really clear SBS Toby, they look fantastic, I hope folks bid for a few of yours before they all start making them now.
You should have saved this SBS for a later date.

Yes, good method. The knot is known as the "Allbright" if I remember. It's how I fasten my fly line to the backing

No its not known as a allbright knot Spruce its whats commonly know as a shock leader knot.
Its what most guys use when beach casting to join there main line to there shock leader.
But i'm sure both would work just as well.

Thanks for this..it makes the advice you gave me on another thread much easier to understand!
You mention about clips..I've been using the gemini clips used by sea anglers. Only just start though, and only had a few on them. Seem ok but early days. Is this the sort of thing you are trying?

Similar things yes.
The only thing that worries me about the Gemini clips is the weight of them.
They do a smaller one which i am testing and a couple of designs from the US.
