Default Leader material/knot for pike

I have been using pro-leader and tying it to a length of 15lb florocarbon line, around 8ft( in old money).
This seems ok but not sure what knot to use to tye pro-leader to the florocarbon plus whether there is a better set up?

I use a loop to loop wire to floro and rapala Knot the wire to the fly... so when you change you change the wire and fly so your keeping the wire on the fly...

I don't use pro leader any more as I found it kinked alot when casting I use Suflion now "Toby" on this forum sells it and for a good price as well I also use 25lb floro let's me give it a bit more stick and get it in quicker but that just me.

The best way i have found to attach Surflon micro supreme 26lb to nylon/fluoro is by means of a shockleader knot as use by sea anglers.
Easy to do and strong.
For attaching the fly i use either a davy knot or a perfection loop but i am starting to experiment with a couple of cool clips.

Toby

PS i have just received another load of wire into stock if anyone needs some

I use this set up too. I'm wondering what know you use to tie the pro-leader to the mono with?

I have used an Albright knot. But the wire snaps leaving the dyneema showing. I've superglued it to make it stronger. Should this be ok?

I use small metal oval loops (ESP) sold to carp anglers for the join.

They work great. Simply attach a new bit of wire when required.

An albright would work fine with wire - but its quicker to use a loop.

I wouldnt bother with the pro-leader - stick to a decent real wire.

Id also be tempted to use a nylon section heavier than 15lb. I use std nylon in 25 - 30lb.

hope this helps.

If you do a search for SBS Pike Leader you will see an excellent guide to what you are looking for. The Rook is correct when he says the Surflon Wire is good. Toby that has done the SBS sells this on his website, Fly Tying Materials from Funky Fly Tying

Thanks for the link. I might order a pike fly tying kit with the other things.

I've been using 20lb mono. I tried twisting the mono last night, would anyone recommend it?

Also would anyone recommend This?

Absolutely NOT for pike - The wire, at a stated 4" or 8" log is way too short and you would be risking the very thing we are looking to avoid by using wire - the dreaded bite-off.
15" of 26lb Surflon Micro Supreme or the same length of 40lb Titanium is what I use.

For 9-10wt line.

Nail knot 3ft of 30lb clear hard mono (In my case seafishing Okuma stuff nice and cheap) to the flyline. Perfection loop in the end of this. Then loop to loop 1 1/2ft 18lb hard mono (just Diawa sea fishing stuff again) which in turn is albright knotted to 18inches 20+lb nylon coated wire twist melted to clip for fly attachment. I don't often replace the leader butt just add new 18lb mono and trace together as required. The hard mono is abrasion resistant and stiff enough to turn flies over easily any loss in leader flexibility is hardly critical given the wire trace. Just make sure the fly connection allows a lot of movement.

I know nylon coated wire can rust inside but I change the front section of my 6ft-ish leader regularly and I like the wire covered to avoid damaging the pike if it rolls the trace, it's not like the stuff is costly...

Don't use flouro it's expensive because it's supposed to be invisible and heavy to sink a fly... but the wire trace isn't invisible and wire sinks easily. Only a fool would spend a fortune on flouro in such a set up.

I have tried the Surflon stuff (Toby, you are welcome to try and educate me) but I can't use it at all. I have tried whipping it, tying it and even the dreaded crimps (the whole reason to get knottable wire is to get away from crimps!) I have given up, because
1. it won't knot, with any knot I have tried and people have suggested many. The crimps just pulled out. I can crimp, I make up my own shark traces, but I can't get this stuff to work, even with a Flemish loop. No idea what I am doing wrong. i would love to know because the suppleness of the wire is excellent, but it is no good if both ends let go under minimal strain, like in my fingers!

2. I can haywire twist single strand in my fingers to make up traces on the water if I have to...I usually have a few made up ready to change.

Yes, the single strand kinks, so what, it fishes perfectly well, it just looks a bit untidy. If you are that worried, change it. It is tooth proof for sharks (what I use in various strengths and according to species), so I don't see a pike bothering 56lb wire (which is the same diameter as 10lb braid, so as invisible as doesn't matter!)

I got 300 feet for £6.50. Even if you change it twice as often, it is very affordable, totally reliable and safe for the fish. I just put a loop in one end of the wire to atach a saltwater tapered leader (ending in 20lb) and a round headed crosslock on the other end for easy changes of fly. Hasn't failed me on any fish, including a couple knocking the 30lb mark. You won't break it with the strain you can put on with a #10 fly rod, even straight through pointing the tip at the fish, the fly line itself is only 30lb breaking strain!
