I have tried the Surflon stuff (Toby, you are welcome to try and educate me) but I can't use it at all. I have tried whipping it, tying it and even the dreaded crimps (the whole reason to get knottable wire is to get away from crimps!) I have given up, because
1. it won't knot, with any knot I have tried and people have suggested many. The crimps just pulled out. I can crimp, I make up my own shark traces, but I can't get this stuff to work, even with a Flemish loop. No idea what I am doing wrong. i would love to know because the suppleness of the wire is excellent, but it is no good if both ends let go under minimal strain, like in my fingers!
2. I can haywire twist single strand in my fingers to make up traces on the water if I have to...I usually have a few made up ready to change.
Yes, the single strand kinks, so what, it fishes perfectly well, it just looks a bit untidy. If you are that worried, change it. It is tooth proof for sharks (what I use in various strengths and according to species), so I don't see a pike bothering 56lb wire (which is the same diameter as 10lb braid, so as invisible as doesn't matter!)
I got 300 feet for £6.50. Even if you change it twice as often, it is very affordable, totally reliable and safe for the fish. I just put a loop in one end of the wire to atach a saltwater tapered leader (ending in 20lb) and a round headed crosslock on the other end for easy changes of fly. Hasn't failed me on any fish, including a couple knocking the 30lb mark. You won't break it with the strain you can put on with a #10 fly rod, even straight through pointing the tip at the fish, the fly line itself is only 30lb breaking strain!
