Default Which line for Pike?

Im using an 11# weight forward line which is matched to the rod and have to admit I struggle a bit when fly fishing for Pike, the fly seems to drop on the false casts and the whole thing seems hard work, would a shooting head be a better option?

A Shooting Head set up certainly enables you to get distance quickly but they aren't the most pleasant of lines to use. My personal preference is for a full line, especially if I'm out all day.

There could be other factors involved,ie, too long a leader, too heavy a fly, too much metalware on your trace (swivels/clips etc add unwanted weight).

Thanks Dougie I think you are probably right, i`ll look at getting some weight out of the fly and trace, how are your traces made up?

Could also be a simple timing issue with casting or under-powering the rig. 11 weight is heavy line and rod you need to get that rod loading strong if you want to push the weight of line and a good size fly.

If this is a new set up to you take your time and get the cast right at 30' before you start trying to reach the backing. Do you have a good grasp of the double haul casting technique?

If Im totally honest my double hauling needs work, I know my casting could be better and although I can use 5# - 7# lines when trout fishing fairly well this 11# work is showing up my weaknesses. I do have a top instructor lined up for early in the new year to iron things out.

I got the shooting head idea from reading Alan Hanna`s book as he advises using one but the info could be outdated now.

Yep a shooting head will just add to your casting problems. There are some really good Pike lines on the market with short or bullet tapers that can manage big flies no problem.
