Default Matching the Hatch for Pike ???

What are your views and findings for matching the hatch for pike ??

Do you find that brash lure type jobs work best or maybe patterns that mimic the bait fish that are in your chosen water , ie Roach , Perch Patterns ??

Cheers .

Red face

Neither really; more like Joe Bucher Depth and/or Shallow Raider crankbaits in 'Firetiger or 'Pikey'.

I believe the green/yellow 'Chatreuse' lures are taken as frogs... not much else lives in the mountain lake I fish other than other pike - so I'm geared up with some dressed weedless, on 7/0 Sakumas, to test the theory this spring.

HHmmmm interesting thanks .

See I am kinda thinking that it might be like it is for trout in that when the fish is up and about and feeding on naturals then they way to go is matching it . On the other hand flies that don't really look like anything that would be on the menu can induce a take about of pure aggression ???

It raises the question though "would that fish have taken any fly at that particular moment in time"

I cannot see the point of even trying to, for fly fishing you are stimulating a response, so if you annoy the pike it will attack the bait, if it is hungry it will take the bait, no matter what colour, shape or pattern.

If the main food in a given water is roach then just fishing roach patterns may not be the best idea. Give them something different, get them to investigate.

If the pike only took what was natural to the water, then why I have I caught some huge pike on Sardines and mackerel in Stillwaters miles inland?

I kinda agree with most of that but I am sure sometimes natural patterns would be the way to go .

Is not that I don't know about pike and their behavior as I have been fishing for them for 30 years . I am how ever new to fly fishing for them and was just wondering how people get on with different patterns be it natural or brash .

The thing about catching on sea baits , yes , but over here a roach dead bait out fishes a sea dead hands down .

Anyway is not about baits it is about flies .

Thanks for your views

Over here different waters respond to different baits.

With fly fishing for them I would say the response you want is to trigger an attack on the fly, so, loud brash colours in the murkier waters, clearer waters then try naturals, I have used that approach when lure fishing and it works, but, pike are not human and do not follow normal behaviour patterns, you will always get the odd one that will take a double maggot hookbait and come gently to the net!!!!
