Thumbs up At The River today

I went to a river near me today as I couldn't get out anywhere else . Not ideal fishing venue as was not many places I could get a cast with the steep banks and reeds etc it was tough and was testing my patience !!

Anyway I stuck at it and just walked along and every time I came to a spot where I could make any sort of cast I did so ...

Found this spot where a wee drain runs into the river , was still not ideal as was a **** load of stuff behind me to get caught on ( and I did ) . I made a few cast and then at the end of one retrieve this lad came up from under my bank and hammered my fly ! It gave a good account of its self also , my best so far on the fly

Have added a pic of the spot where I caught it , you see the drain at my feet bottom left and I was casting from behind the clump of reeds .

On a side note when I first got down there and went to have a look see , as I walked down to the water and stood there at the edge of a 10 foot drain that enters the river something came out of the river the other side of the drain about 12 feet from me , turns out it was an Otter with a fish It sat there and looked at me and just carried on eating , went back in the water and caught another fish , this time went onto the other bank to eat it . I went back to the car to get my camera and got it on film but it is not good quality . Was about to take some stills then the fkin batteries went dead !! I made a mad dash into the village to get some more but when I got back it was gone .
I got to watch it for about 15 mins though right in front of me and it caught and ate 5 fish . All the time it kept an eye on me but must have not seen me as any threat , also shows how good my stealth is

Have added a pic of the drain to show how close it was to me , you see my foot in there for sacle , Otter was one side and I was the other ..

So all in all a great day out and really pleased I made the effort ...

Cheers

Nice Danny, well done, what fly was the otter using?
I had a very close encounter with 4, yes 4 in one pool last season, and I tell you what, it is an amazing experience.
You will never forget today.
I see the President arrived.

I was tossing up whether to get frozen to death tomorrow in my so far fruitless attempts to catch a half-way decent jack.
Then I read your post and thought "I must be mad. A fruitless day fishing beats staying in and listening to reports of England getting hammered again, by the Aussies".
Great post and pics.
Cheers, mate.

Here you go Chris , The fly was kindly given to me by another forum member as I don't have the materials to tie my own pike flies ( yet )

It did have a nice head on it with some red fluff and a pair of eyes but I managed to beat all that off in the trees , reeds and anything else that could be caught
