Default Pike thoughts

Well the sewin and salmon season is over in my area, so will have a few trips out after bass, and then its grayling and pike. so have been topping up colors that work for me for pike.

Click the image to open in full size.
Perch / jack colors, tied using Deercreek Glis and Glint. with silver holographic tinsel with Deercreek crystal eyes, and then coat head with Clear Cure Goo.

Set Of four waiting.

Again a good color for me, Blue / red / white and pink. with red/gold and silver micro holographic tinsel, and also tie using Deercreek Gliss and Glint. plus deercreek Crystal eyes, eye and nose coated with Clear Cure Goo.

Set of four waiting for a swim.

Hope you like them.

Great flies Dai. You've also learn't with experience to cover the eyes with epoxy for durability under the onslaught of a pike's jaws. Best to keep em bomb proof.

Pulse and flash are key. As well as extra large eyes on my pike flies.
Pearly flash interlaced generously with ep fibres is essential for refracting light - as in a wounded bait fish swimming askew etc...

Cheers, Yes best to coat the head area, or as you say pike will mess them up.

And the deercreek material, does give you lots of movement. with pike always add good flash

Thanks for comments on tie.

Nicely done Dai.

Must admit though, with my 'natural' baitfish patterns i tend to go with a minimum of flash, just a little glint. My streamers on the other hand.......

What's the rational behind minimal flash in 'natural' bait-fish patterns Dougie?

It would tend to go against modern day thinking for deep bodied fly patterns which effectively represent thick set, stocky school-fish in both fresh and saltwater including: roach, bream, rudd, travelly, amber jack and horse mackerel.

Most of these bait fish are strikingly iridescent in their natural colour formation, refracting light even in muted conditions. With almost luminous, light refracting scales on their flanks in underwater habitats. Before I start a new range of species-specific pike flies I gather a much visual information of the fishes colour and form in it's natural eco system... best place to start is your local aquarium with a sketch book.

Its based purely on experience of different fishing situations. Quite often i've found that in clear water, the fish shy away from over-flashy patterns prefering something more sombre with a natural profile.

I also had a few days on Chew back in May where the fish were following the stuff I usually throw, sparklers and the like but not committing. A change to a smaller perch pattern with a tiny suggestion of flash was nailed straight away. Perhaps coincidence but enough to make my mind up!

But again, most of the waters I fish contain no silverfish whatsoever, the diet being trout, perch and eels in most natural waters.

Makes total sense on the perch and eel front Doogie.

Have you come up with a good brown trout imitation yet?

Cheers,

Brent.
