Hi, I too was a bit disappointed that it wasn't very practical. But it was full of enthusiasm I guess!
What I have done is start with some of the CDC 'Step-by-steps' on this site (just browse down them and you come across quite a few) and a quick search on Google brings up plenty of others too. And the advantage is I can tie the flies I am likely to use, rather than have to stick to what's in a particular book.
CDC is a fabulous material to tie with, and I'm sure I get more on the hook because the fish dont feel the hackles as they do with other feathers....
Cheers, and good luck with it.
