Default "Fishing Small Flies" by Ed Engle

Anyone read this book and have anything to comment on it? I saw it recommended on a blog recently and before taking the plunge I was looking for any views.
Cheers in advance.

Just a quick note to say that there are two quickish reviews now on Ed Engle's books on me blog for "Tying Small Flies" and "Fishing Small Flies". Should you be interested then please take a look.

Cheers

Hi,

Sorry I missed your posts requesting info on these two books. I am glad you enjoyed them, as I would have recommended them.

Not sure if you've seen it but another book that might interest you is Midge Magic by Don Holbrook and Ed Koch. It can seem a bit obsessive but the tying is fantastic and photographs are great in their detail. Not sure if you want to head down the road of size 32's though.

I got lured into this world as I was failing to catch many grayling and so sort out the help of somebody who I new caught them for fun. He introduced me to size 22 IOBO CdC Humpys which are relatively simple to tie and catch fish.

The skill level of the creations in these books is way beyond me but I can always dream.

Thanks

David

Hi David

Thanks for your feedback. The Midge Magic book is up there for a read when my book budget is repleneshed.

The 32's are beyond me I can barely thread a size 20 with my mince's these days and can just about tie up to that size but I enjoy reading about the 32's even if most of the fish can't see them either! Incidentally what tippet is used on these flies?

The skill levels are way ahead of me but like you I can still dream.

Will do a review on Midge Magic when I have read the book if you don't beat me to it.

Cheers

I used the Varivas tippets (they go to 10x) and leaders and you can get these from Spidersplus (Phil) on the forum. The rivers I fish are narrow and tree lined so 9-10ft leader + tippet seems to work for me.

Even at 7x knots are getting difficult for me (eyesights going as life begins at 40), so I don't go often below that. One thing from the midge magic book is the simple knot described in the first chapter has proved a boon and seems as reliable as other more tried and tested ones. I cut in the link to the preview of the book on amazon and its on page 6.

Hope thats of help

Isn't that a Davy Knot? (But from a different angle, I think – spatial awareness never was my strong suit.)

It seems to be, although like you when looking at knots spatial awareness goes awry.

Thanks

Re the Varivas leaders and tippets, unfortunately I find they kink very easily. At the moment, my smallest size is about 20, and i find the Varivas eyes very very small. Eyesight defo decreases after 40....
