Default Blood Knots: Radio 4 Book of the Week

Anyone else been listening to this? A nicely-written memoir of a boy's fishing education, at least going by the extracts read on the radio. Think I might have to get a copy. I see from Amazon that it has received good reviews from some decent mainstream literary reviewers.

Have been listening to this for the past few days. Good bit of radio, shame it's not longer.

I was driving down to the wood yard in my pick up when that came on yesterday morning so I decided to take it easy and watched the Taff go by from Ynys Bridge while it played through. A nice moment listening to some very well written fishing literature. Here's a Link for the idlers!

I am reading this at the moment and loving it. Will comment further when finished.

This is a personal story of the author's love of fishing from an early age. I found his school life at Ampleforth fascinating, and about as far removed from my own comprehensive in Luton as it is possible to be. For example he is taken 'under the wing' of Robert Nairac (later killed by the I.R.A.), and introduced to the dry fly & falconry. He describes a students school report as including 'his casting has improved'.
This book was a gift and not one I would normally buy, however,I would have missed out, as the quality of writing had me engaged from start to finish.

Just reading it now to review in the next issue of TF. Well-written and I have to say the word I'd use for his Ampleforth memories, Regan, would be "hilarious". I was cracking up while reading it in a hospital waiting room this morning when I suddenly remembered the three people around me were all waiting for colonoscopies. Not one of my more sensitive moments...

I bought a copy of "Blood Knots" on the strength of both this string and Peter Lapsley's very positive review of the book in the last issue of FF & FT. I agree with all of you - it is a superb and very thought-provoking read. I also think the title is ingenious - the obvious usage of "blood knot" is a pure fishing one, but it's also another way of saying "blood tie", as the author's relationship with his father is one of the themes running through the book. You could even say there's a third use of "blood" at work here, in view of Robert Nairac's ultimate tragic fate.

I loved this book and I am so pleased that Radio 4 picked up on it. I love the genre of angling writing because it is about so much more than fishing. I hope it gets the genre more into the mainstream.

I think what really sells the book to me is the general tone of introspection. I think he captures beautifully that quiet, thinking feeling we get from a day near water.

On a total aside, Robert Nairac would be my ideal man!
