Default Stream/Small river book

Hi,

I was kindly reccommended Goddard's The Trout and the Fly book by Bumps but wondered if there were any other good books for learning watercraft for small streams. This year I have joined a club with 4 miles of small stream with native and stock brown. When I say small it is between 6ft and 12ft (is that classed as small?) Having never fished a river it is a bit scary as where to fish having only fished small stillwaters. So I am looking for a good book which details where fish generally lie and areas to look out for, as well as flies selection for the time of day/season etc.

Any recommendations?

Brook and river trouting by Edmonds & Lee is worth considering. Difficult to obtain cheaplybut worth getting your hands on a copy.

Worth a look round this area of the site for that one

Orange Otter

or

Angling with the fly - Watson

Personally I would say you can't really learn how to do it, better to get out and practice, you may scare the first three but the fourth will take your fly like a good un.

You could try:
Trout Fishing on Hill Streams by Richard Clapham.
Fishing a Highland Stream by John Inglis Hall.
Trout Fishing in Brooks by G.Garrow Green.
Salmon and Trout in Moorland Streams by Major Kenneth Dawson.

A couple more for you:

Lou Stevens: The Small Stream Dry Fly
John Gierach: Fly Fishing Small Streams (US based but still can't believe no-one's mentioned it yet!)

I've copied Terry Cousins excellent post's on "Reading Rivers & Tracing Trout" from these forums, added them to a word document and then printed it out. Very informative and easy reading, I can picture myself in the surroundings and locations he describes... Sry you'd lost me there for a second or two!
See the forum link here: Reading Rivers, Tracing Trout
I think thats the right link. I've even downloaded it to my phone, so when the missus is in tesco I can find something better to do whilst waiting in the car, and have a good read again.
