Default Whats on your reading list?

Hi folks,

After a recent move to Lincolnshire I've found that I'm reading about fishing more than I am actually fishing. What's in your top five must books to read for pleasure or learning?

I'm just getting to the end of Oliver Kites Nymph fishing in Practise, which I've thoroughly enjoyed! But are there better reads?

I'm having to adapt to new challenges with small chalkstream fishing after years of fishing the Tay, Earn and Allanwater! Hence a slight thirst for knowledge.

At the moment i am reading, (for the second time), "The Other Side of the Stream - the mysteries of fly-fishing", by C.B. McCully. A beautifully and eloquently written book, philosophical, poetic, thought provoking, mind enhancing, evocative, almost mystical account of the evolution of the mind of a thinking angler. You may not learn much about fishing with this book, but you may learn something about your self and the world you inhabit.

Of all the many fishing books i have read, this is one of the very few that hits home on a human level, rather than mere instruction.

I have just read, A Dream of Jewelled Fishes by John Aston, great read, and thanks to those who put me onto it.
At the moment I am reading Trout Bum by John Gierach, can't put it down, highly recommended.

Me too at the moment.

I've just started to read "A River Never Sleeps" by Roderick L Haig-Brown (1908 - 1976).

First published in 1946, the book has been reissued this year by Skyhorse Publishing - ISBN 978-1-60239-939-6.

Just about to start Secret Flies of the Czech and Slovak Fly-Tiers. Not sure if it qualifies as a reading book although I am sure I will read each dressing but only those with the sub titles!

To be honest this type of fishing can't really be learned from a book. I have lots of books but they are mostly fly tying.

You could look to MicroPatterns Darrel Martin, In the Ring of the Rise - Goddard, The trout and the fly - Goddard, Trout Flyfishin Techniques - Goddard, Chalkstream Chronicles - Patterson.

Really Patterson and Goddard are quite the best source, for the chalkstreams, you could look to Skues Halford etc but it is heavy weather, heavy weather for the modern times.

Hi PC,

I'm about half way through a book called : Fishing for Dreams, Notes from the waters edge; by D C Reid - and so far, It appeals to my kind of reading!!

There are quite a number of books that I like, some more than others!

1, The Compleat Angler By Izaak Walton - One of my Favourites!!

2, Trout Bum By John Gierach - I liked and enjoyed reading it!

3, Salar the Salmon, by Henry Williamson! Every angler should read it!!

4, A Clear Water Stream, by Henry Williamson! A classic!!

5, A Dream of Jewelled Fishes, by John Aston! Something for everyone!

6, The Angle of the Cast, by Gwilym Hughes! Great stories!

7, Trout Hunting, by Bob Wyatt! I like it - it has a little something about it!

I've also recently read : The Longest Silence, by Tom McGuane! It was an OK, sort of read! But I preferred the trout bum by Gierach!

I've also bought (although not read it yet) A River Never Sleeps, By Roderick Haig Brown; heard a lot about the book - really looking forward to reading it!

There are a few more I could mention; but, I think the books I've listed above are all worth reading! But I'm always looking for other interesting angling books!

This book sounds just like my kind-a-book; you make it sound so appealing!

I'll have a look for it !

Interesting though they maybe, though both I and the author found Salar laboured, a good enough first time read.

Trout Hunting has just gone orf to Dominic Winter's book auction with several other titles. I must say that particular tome I found more than a trifle irritating.

The American ones I haven't read though I discern an influence vis a vis a growing fashion to be a "wannabe trout bum". Found the title too irritating personally.

River Trout Flies by Roberts is quite good, wouldn't find me sending that orf to auction.

I agree that Henry Williamson's : Salar is a little laboured; but worth the effort! Following the Salmon as it tried to make progress - failed then tried again and again; and at the end; the end for Salar! Quite emotional! I'm a bit of a softy really!! Gierach's : Trout Bum IMO is a full time angling reporter following his dreams; getting in as much fishing as is possible! A rough tough; and continual fishing expedition. A book to enjoy; but not necessarily try to emulate! Trout Hunting? for me Personally, it just has something about it! I liked it! But I'm a push over for a good story. I also take pleasure in reading of others achieving their goal and facing the elements head on.
