Further to advice that Fish & Fly have acquired this title we are researching the history of this book but have been unable to find the date of its first publication.

It was owned by The Field and we acquired the title from Lord Harmsworth who believes it was first published in the late 1800's.

Perhaps someone has an early copy or some information regarding this?

Thanks

Richard

I have several copies, the earliest being 1949/50 and in this edition it mentions that it was the 63rd edition and that the 62nd edition was 10 years earlier.

Thanks that is interesting.

The current edition is the 91st and i have a 1957 edition on its way to me.

Odd ones appear on EBay.

It seems likely first edition was around 1880.

Must be one somewhere!

Richard

The 1926 edition (edited by Sheringham) describes itself as the "55th Annual Edition", and the 1922/3 as "the 53rd".

Doc

A quick search of Abe for "Where to Fish, The Field" gets you back to, as Doc says, 1922 . . perhaps some of the other book sites may have earlier?
Did "The Field" acquire it from someone else?
Some great name editors in there!

Hugh Tempest Sheringham (1876 - 1930) certainly edited the title and 'The Field'. He is acknowledged to be one of the finest angling writers of the twentieth century. He was for many years the angling editor of The Field magazine. His many articles for that magazine, and his several books, were written in a beautiful style, Victorian and refined, yet fresh, and without Patrician loftiness. Sheringham's work is as admired today as it was during his lifetime.

There will be much more information in "A Memory of Hugh Sheringham" 1931 by Guy C. Pollock - surely a "must" for Forum HQ?

Many thanks for help with this.

It does look as though first edition would have been in mid 1800's so will keep looking!

I did buy a later one 1973 published by the Field and signed by Wallis and will hopefully add further additions for HQ over next few weeks.

Our job now as guardians of this historic title is to produce a deserving and accurate 2010/11 edition! (and website!)

Watch this space!

Richard

The title changed over the years. "Anglers' Register" to "Anglers' Guide" and finaly "Where to Fish".
Francis Francis was angling editor at The Field (he was instrumental in providing trout eggs for James Youl to ship on the 'Norfolk' to Tasmania - and on to New Zealand - to stock those nation's lakes and rivers) when he produced this guide; possibly the first one.

The vendor may have got the date wrong. It would have been published in 1860 to be current for 1861. If it's not the first - it's close.
