Default The River Suir - A Blue Riband River for Trout & Salmon Fishing by John Lalor

Anyone that intends to fish the River Suir in Ireland should get this book. It is an invaluable reference book for one of the best Fly-Fishing Rivers in Europe. It includes information on access points, club details, rules and club constitutions, fish details, flora and fauna, hot spots, angling equipment, flies for the season, details on all the different club's waters, permits, guides, and accommodation. It doesn't just do the main river but includes information on all the Suir's tributaries.

A wonderful book and I have to praise John Lalor highly on the research he carried out for this book. The best book on the River Suir by far and a wonderful addition to any Angler's Library.

I picked it up by accident during the week while browsing through my local book shop and I'm sure glad I did

Bert

Nice find Bert, must have a look for that. Thee Suir always stumps me for some reason, I've had one great day there and about 10 **** ones.

It's a cracking river Steve and I've had very few bad days there, in fact I've had some unbelievable days on it. It is stuffed with trout and the upper end around Holycross and Twofords Bridge has some awesome fishing. Some very big trout too, and around Mayfly time some whoppers are caught. Never stocked also, pure wild brown trout.

Yea, the best fishing I've had has been around the Twofords bridge area but I've been up around Cahir (Swiss Cottage) a good few times and caught **** all (one or two each trip and nothing to write home about size wise). Last year I was fishing in Slovenia and met two French anglers who were raving about mayfly time on the Suir - they come over every year for a week or two. I must be catching it at the wrong times because on most of my trips I don't even see much rising, compared to what I'd see on a typical trip to other rivers.

The Cahir club have some great water, from Liamy's Lane down to Carrigatha where the Ardfinnan's Anglers Club waters start has some excellent fishing. Trout of 1lb are plentiful here with some to 3lb and more. They also have the right bank down from New Bridge (except for the first field - farmer won't let anglers fish here) and on down through Ballycarron this fishes very well particularly late in the season.

My favourite stretches though are the Holycross Ballycamus Anglers and the Thurles/Drish Angler's waters. Golden also has some excellent fishing. Endless trout fishing on this river, they can be tricky on the dries but well worth putting the time in.

All clubs on the Suir encourage catch & release and most anglers release all trout caught. There is also a size limit of 10'' on most club waters.

Planning a summer trip around Holycross. Is the fishing OK in August?
