Try 'The Cast' by Ed Jaworski. Based on the Lefty Kreh style of casting.

The best by far in my humble opinion - Jason Borger, "Nature of Fly casting; A Modular Approach."

Jason Borger's Nature of Fly Casting: A Modular Approach: Amazon.co.uk: Borger (Jason).: Books Jason Borger's Nature of Fly Casting: A Modular Approach: Amazon.co.uk: Borger (Jason).: Books

"Casting with Lefty Kreh" is a modern classic.

Try Lefty Krehs ultimate guide to fly fishing it has around 100 pages devoted to casting, 30 pages about approach and presentation and another 300 to fly fishing in general. A very good read and if I remember correctly was an Ebay bargain. JB

Heres a copy

There a quite a few of the other Lefty Kreh books mentioned too.

I was bought this book for my birthday
Master the Cast: Fly Casting in Seven Lessons: Amazon.co.uk: Jr., George V. Roberts: Books Master the Cast: Fly Casting in Seven Lessons: Amazon.co.uk: Jr., George V. Roberts: Books
, I have one question would you begin the book on the roll cast or the basic pick up and lay down cast, because the first chapter is on the roll cast.

When I first learnt and in subsequent lessons with an instructor (Henry Lowe), he would always start with the roll cast. However if you are in a field then it makes it difficult to learn a roll cast, you need access to water.
I have two Lefty Kreh books, the small pocket size 'Modern Fly Casting Methods' and the 'Casting with Lefty Kreh', the latter is a big book with great photographs and the former is a much handier size, which sets out his 5 basic principles.
I would also recommend Joan Wulff's 'Fly Casting Techniques' which perfectly compliments the DVD 'Dynamics of Fly Casting'.
As previously mentioned 'Master the Cast' is also a good place to start.

Review

Mel Krieger has found the best way to translate flycasting instruction into print. -- Steve Rajeff, world casting champion and fly-rod designer

Product Description

This classic instructional text, used in flycasting schools around the world, is now available to the book trade for the first time. Fly-casting is a skill of almost mythic proportions. The gymnastic beauty of the casting scenes in the film A River Runs Through It sent thousands of new anglers to the shores of America's streams and lakes. Yet more often than not, discussions or instructions about casting bog down in a world of technical minutiae that is almost impenetrable to the beginner. Mel Krieger has cracked the code in The Essence of Flycasting. Through detailed instructions and dozens of precise photographs and diagrams, he clearly dissects this arcane art into understandable and executable steps to take the raw beginner from piles of line on the ground to graceful loops in the air. And the seasoned veteran will advance from struggling with 30-foot casts to skillfully double-hauling vastly more line across the water. This classic book of fly-fishing instruction belongs in every fishing library. The standard text used in flycasting schools around the world, Essence is now available to the general public for the first time. Illustrated with more than 150 clear, step-by-step b/w photos and illustrations.

most mentioned, master the cast in 7 lessons is a good place to start and you can pick up a second hand copy on amazon for a couple of quid just,

as lighthouse says borger is probibally the best available but its detailed beyond the needs of the average caster, and about 40 quid i think.

joan wulff is still one of the most comprehensive, it has everything and the dvd sort of compliments it.

for rolls and speys simon gawsworths new book has to be the one to get,

the US fly fishers federation website lists some of the lesser known gems too.
