Hi All... dunno how many of you do this when hunting out decent books, but when I find a well written book and I enjoy it, I often look to see whose writings influenced the author and follow it up.

You may have seen on a previous thread that I received Bob Wyatt's "Trout Hunting", for Christmas. I read it cover to cover in a couple of days and really enjoyed it. But I also sensed that here was a writer who was really well read himself and I enjoyed his references to the writing of Jose Ortega Y Gasset, so on pot luck, I ordered his book "Meditations On Hunting" - it is a brilliant piece.

I have had similar success in following leads via CRW to James Babb, and Chris Knowles (Orange Otter) to James Evans to name but one or two.

Just wondered if any others on here have had similarly successful literary trails.

Best
Dave

Dave,

Whenever I read the older books I always follow up any reference to books referred to by the Author..usually on Advanced Book Exchange.

Most of them are either unavailable or horrendously expensive and I have bought a couple that are horrendously boring. Now and then, you find a gem.

The bibliography in Orange Otter is a treasure chest as is the bibliography in Michael Leighton's, 'Trout Flies of Shropshire', which is where I found reference to the James Evans book. (I found a copy of that in Hay on Wye - £6 I think - a quick, silvery person bought it!)

Following the bibliographical trail I've discovered 'Rod in Hand', by C V Hancock and also his book 'East and West of Severn', 'Here and There a Lusty Trout' by Rev Edward Powell's brother, T A Powell.

An interesting read to dip into is 'The Fishing in Print - a guided tour through five centuries of angling literature,' by Arnold Gingrich.

I think its the Gingrich that contains my favorite fishing short story ... if thats the word.(favorite). it certainly had the most profound effect on me.
About two friends on the edge of the war zone in WW1 who get premision to go down near the front line to fly fish for trout... and the adventure they have. Wont say more, just in case someone hasn't got to it, and is going to read it.
But if you know what on earth I am on about, and have read it, could you please tell me? Id love to read it again, and see if its as powerful on the second viewing.

I used to obviously do it a lot at university, but obviously education wasn't natural because I have never thought of doing it since.

I like the thread though of choosing books. I feel a purchase or two.

Tigermoth ........... just had a delivery of Bob Wyatt's book and Gasset's work. Thankyou for the steer.
