Default Beginners fly tying book?

Hi
Looking for a book to learn more about fly tying. I've already started tying but want to learn new techniques and patterns.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Paul

Welcome Paul, you will get more from the fly tying section on this forum than any book, in my opinion.
Just have a look at some of the SBS's on here, outstanding stuff.
This forum is blessed with some of the best tyers I have ever seen.
If you really want a book, try the library first, before you go wasting your hard earned on something that may not suit you.

i find that the numerous videos posted on youtube are invaluable when used alongside the info in the fly tying section here. Just search the tube for whichever technique/fly you want to master........

Ditto
when your learning so much is in, figuring out how to manipulate the tools and materials into the fly. Youtube is a God send.

Why not try to locate your local fly tying club?

Club and Non Commercial Events - Fly Fishing Forums

I joined Bolton Fly Tyers last year, and met some great likeminded people.

I wouldnt worry about not knowing anyone, or breaking into a clique, a love of fishing is a sort of glue which binds many different characters and welcomes others immediately.

Cheers all,

The problem is I live in Belgium so it isn't easy to find a real club. I am member of a club but the tying sessions are very laborious - we tie one, yes one fly in a two hour session - first the "teacher" shows us s-l-o-w-l-y how to do it and we then try and that is that!
I'll have a look at the SBS here on the forum but I wanted to give the missus an idea of what to order me for Xmas!
Thanks,

Paul

I agree that the SBS's on here are a great help as are some of the videos on You Tube. Steve Kale put me onto Charlie Cravens book which will give you precise instructions on how to build a fly from the hook to the fluff and feathers. He goes into detail on things that you would not always see in an SBS or a video, for example he has a neat trick to ensure that end of a rib that you tie in will always lie under the hook shank. He starts at the beginning and builds up your skills as you progress through the book.

Charlie Craven's Basic Fly Tying: Modern Techniques for Flies That Catch Fish Charlie Craven's Basic Fly Tying: Modern Techniques for Flies That Catch Fish

The book mostly features patterns used in the States on their rivers and lakes. The techniques however, are totally transferable. I've been tying for about 15 years and I picked up some really good tips and tricks. I'm really pleased that Steve recommended this book to me, I bought a copy for a mates birthday and he's as enthusiastic about it as I am about it. All I want now is for him to do a book on traditional wet patterns that we use in the UK.

The other great way to learn is to join a group as there's nothing like having someone sat next to you who know what they are doing. I used to go to our local FDG, but now myself an a couple of mates get together on a Wednesday night to share ideas and patterns (talk rubbish and drink beer as the other half would say).

Happy tying!

Cheers

Andy

I agree with everyone here, theres a great sbs on the forum, but it's also nice to hear someone explain tying the flies, like Davie

Just click on his selection of flies on the right of his page.

I have not read Charlie Cravens book but knowing his tying ability I suspect it is an ideal purchase. As an all round tier he is quite exceptional.
