Small Water Trout Fishing by Charles Jardine is my bible for small stillwater fishing generally, and there is a good section in it on stalking.

Big Trout Fishing by Peter Cockwill was written during the peak of the stillwater stalking era in the late 1980's.
I have this book & around 75% of it relates directly to what you are after.
A decent used copy will set you back all of a fiver, including p&p

I also have Trout From Small Stillwaters. That has less about stalking in it but at the same times covers more areas.

Hi D4veh,

Ive read the books above, and imho i wouldn't bother with any of them for hints and tuition. Most of what they say, imo, is plain wrong. A lot of stalking writers tell you to cast your flies 2 feet from the fish, which will spook him almost every time, and tell you that small flies are the order of the day which, again, is contrary to what i have learned in my 30 years of stalking.

IMO the 4 things to bear in mind are the following

1 - Get some good polaroids.
2 - keep mobile - don't stand still for hours gazing at the same water
3 - walk slowly and quietly
4 - leave the white t shirt at home!

Your ability to spot fish and gauge weight/species/colour etc will come in time, as will your favourite flies.

I would be more than willing to give you a few pointers if you'd like. Drop me a PM if you fancy it.

Cheers
Alex

I haven't read any of those books but your advice runs true. Perhaps you ought to write a book yourself on dyalking fish?

Believe me Loopy ive thought long and hard about it. I've even got the title.. 'Unorthodox fly fishing for trout' - I have read so many fishing books, all giving the same advice, and listened to soo many 'experts' who think you want to hear all the purist 'advice'. Don't get me wrong, i don't advocate chucking a blob into a chalkstream, but i do feel that there are a variety of methods that you won;t find in any book because the authors are afraid of writing them, or want to keep the real fish catching methods to themselves.
