Thumbs up salar the salmon

by henry williamson, my dad let me read this book as a kid and ive never forgotten about it

a great story of the salmon making his way back to spawn...

Salar the Salmon
(1936)
A novel by
Henry Williamson

In Latin "salar" means "leaper" and to the Romans who first came to England the name perfectly described the magnificent sea-run salmon that fought their way up rivers and streams.

In Henry Williamson's great nature story, Salar is a five-year-old salmon returning to the stream of his birth. He faces great dangers--cruising lampreys, poachers with their cruel nets and spears, sharp-eyed otters, cascading falls--all between Salar and his goal in the spawning sands.

"No lover of the country can fail to be thrilled. The author has the power given to few of seeing life from the point of view of the animals he describes." (Guardian)

"A rare and beautiful book that should take its place as a classic among the few that are written at once with a poet's insight and a naturalist's knowledge." (The New York Times)

Yes I Agree!!

A Classic; and not really a children's book. You would have a greater understanding and affiliation with what is written as an Adult!
SALAR THE SALMON by Henry Williamson, is excellent!
A must read for all anglers!

Read it again! It gets better as you get older; and you'll have a far greater understanding of Henry Williamson Writing and comprehension!

I think that all the Henry Willamson books are now available as a 1 volume set.
Salar the Salmon, Brock the Badger, Tarka the Otter etc.
Agree with the comments on Salar too

The film is usually better. Falkus did this in 'Salmo the Leaper 1977' - it had a good mention in his obituary:

Great book... I read it some time ago. I don't think it was quite as good as Tarka The Otter, but a great read anyway. I was fascinated by the introduction by Richard Williamson, his son, which gave us a glimpse of the author's true character.

There is a copy on the bookshelf behind me and I'm presently looking for some reading material... mmmm!
