Thumbs up On Fishing - Brian Clarke

On Fishing
This one's a real treat. Written by the fishing correspondent for the Times, B.C has compiled a hoard of old previously published writings mixed with others written for the book. It's great for those new to fly fishing (me), those who have come from a course fishing background (me) and old hands (not me yet) alike.

His style is relaxed and friendly and he doesn't waffle about tackle all week, in fact he has a very 'no nonsense' attitude to the whole affair of catching fish.

I really liked this one and it was a little like watching Q.I, in the sense that I can now recant interesting and clever sounding facts to people that make me look much brighter and better read than I really am.

A really great book. I'm just over half way through it and now actively look forward to the morning train journey to work so I can read some more. Definitely of particular interest to newcomers to the world of fly fishing, and just a really entertaining, witty and well written compendium. I would recommend it to anyone.

I found Paxmans book VERY boring. I would get it from the library rather than buy it, that way you can take it back.

I like Brian Clarke's Stuff and I will most likely acquire this book. I have a signed copy of "The Pursuit of Stillwater Trout" which in my opinion is a classic, being the detailed career of a trout fishing beginner to finally becoming a very competent performer indeed.

Bought this book on Saturday, glad its getting good write ups as i was afraid it would be similar to paxmans which i found to be incredibly tedious. Not an enjoyable read at all, written far too much like an academic textbook than a good fishing read. Also bought Ian Banks, Raw Spirit, In search of the perfect dram, which i have started instead of On fishing. Not strictly fishing, but the two go hand in hand surely!

I have just started reading it for a second time, knowledge combined with excellent writing style.

I say, steady on MrTrout. I bought it for Noeyedeer as a Birthday present!
(mock outrage). There's some good stuff in there, one about NOT catching Salmon, which is N's speciality.
