Default Recommendations for good general fly-fishing (UK - esp. Scotland) book for a one-season newbie :)

Hi all!

Im sure this has been asked countless times but I couldnt be bothered going back through the forum history to find anything so:

I'm looking for a good general fly fishing book (with especial regard to rivers but not shying away from lochs, lakes, ponds etc) - brown trout mainly, but also with info about sea trout, salmon fishing etc (not too fussed - yet! - about the latter). Emphasis on techiniques rather than anecdotes if possible not too expenive - basically I want something that can be an Xmas stocking filler via Amazon or other book-related site. I realise this is a very subjective area and if it helps ive got the basic casting technique down so specifics on fly-casting not really required (i'll get that roll cast one day lol). Obviously any good general book will feature a very broad overview of fly fishing for different species ubut if theres a trout river fishing classic manual out there i'd love to hear about it - UK-based of course

Thanks all

Les

If you´re into loch fishing I´d recommend Stan Headley: The Loch Fishers Bible
Excellent book, it makes you think about fishing. Packed with information, you´ll have to read it over and over to pick up all the information. It´s too much for one read. Best, Bobby

Slightly out of date, but brought up to date by joining ad updating his 2 books on stillwater trout fishing and river trout fishing called ''the complete flyfisher'' by Peter Lapsley.Recommended.
I believe that your Remit for a book is too large, you are looking for Far too much information from 1 book.

This is not really true, authors tend to concentrate on 1 species.

You could consider "The Guinness Book of Game Fishing" second edition by William B Currie, You can get it for 50p second hand or about £18.00 new and also from Amazon.

It covers five main areas from Game fish known to our shores through to catching them.

The book has a real Scottish flavour. If you were to buy it you must take into consideration that some of the fashions have changed an not just the clothes as it was first published in 1990.

Oh and you will need to find a largish woman to nick some stockings from as the book 12 x 8 x 1".
