Default Beneath the Black water

I’ve just been on a fantastic fishing trip but I didn’t leave the house. I was taken on this journey by Jon Berry’s wonderful book called “Beneath the Black Water”
The content of the book is basically all about Jon’s obsession with Ferox trout but it is actually much more than that. It’s actually a glimpse into the last thirteen years of Jon’s life.
Although I certainly do not have a passion for ferox trout nor do I ever intend to hunt for these mysterious creatures I really did find this book compulsive reading. His whole obsession and drive really struck a chord with me. I defy any passionate fisherman who reads this book not to deny that they see a bit of themselves within these pages. Jon captures the essence of fishing and in some part explains the theory that there really is more to fishing than catching fish. It’s about the journey, the landscapes, the planning, the anticipation, the people you fish with, the unknown and sheer escapism.
My only criticism of this book is that it wasn’t long enough; I never wanted the journey to end. To be honest I think Jon’s journey hasn’t really ended he has only paused to collect his thoughts.
As you may have guessed I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

I've heard it's a great read. Lovely title as well. I have such a mountain of fishing books to get through, but it is on my 'to get' list.

I spoke to Jon not long after this book came out and he said that out of all the writing he's done, this is the story that meant the most to himself and just had to be written. Still haven't read it myself but I will get round to it in time.

Just seen this posting , I received a copy of this book from one of my mates knowing that i did a lot of trolling many moons ago . Must admit never seen it before on my book trolls , But totally agree with Old jock . It is a very well written book taking you on a journey through the eyes of the author . I could certanaly concur with many of his stories . Only down point for me it was just getting really good then you run out of pages , But its certanaly one of the best books ive browsed through for many a day . 10/10 for me . A hope theres a follow up

Its a fine book about his journeys as a Ferox man but if you were looking for insight into Ferox fishing then this book is not for you.
I dont like when books have the pictures in the middle and not among the pages discussing the capture.

Agree with all that has been said - I bought this book earlier this year and packed on a business trip to NY. Couldn't put the book down and finished it in a day. Was a shame on 2 counts in that 1. I didn't ever want it to finish and 2. I hadn't packed any other books and was stuck with US TV for a week! The book really engages and will be full of familiar themes to any angling reader. Best buy for a long time and a real surprise treat!
