Default Historical books

Hello,

I'm Levente from Hungary. I'm interested in the history of fly fishing, especially the way of the flies from the ancient to 1960s. Because I live in Hungary, the research of it is very difficult. I have some books ( Conrad Voss Bark, Andrew Herd, A. Courtney Williams, etc. ) but I think my list is not compleat yet.
Would anybody offer books in this theme? I'm interested in copies of famous or important articles, too.
I hope, I will find similar fanatic historians here and we will discuss in this fantastic scholarship.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Levente,

I'd recommend reading 'F.M. Halford and the dry-fly revolution' by Tony Hayter. It describes the development of fly fishing on the chalkstreams of England at the end of the 19th Century, beginning of the 20th and the major figures of that time. Tony Hayter is a professional historian and it shows in this thoroughly researched book.

There are hundreds if not thousands of them - a quick look through this section on literature will help first off.

There's some great books in the links in this webpage Settle Anglers Association: Online Books
after a few clicks you can download them in pdf format.

Many thanks for your help again. I hope, I'll utilize your advices and offers.
I'm interested in articles, too, in this theme for example about dispute of Halford and Skues and other interesting and story about old flies and fly fishing from the past.
In Hungary we need to know the history of fly fishing because the fly fishing means ultra fast rod, large arbour reel, very long distance cast in this country recently. There is a fly fishing shop here where you can buy spectra dubbing, foam flies, etc. but can't find mallard quill or Pearsall's thread.

'G.E.M. Skues, The Way of a Man with a Trout' by T. Donald Overfield includes 71 articles and 30 letters from Skues, that appeared in the Journal of the Flyfishers Club between 1911 and 1948. There is also an account of the debate that took place in the Flyfishers' Club in 1938 on the subject of fishing the nymph.

'The Essential G.E.M. Skues' by Kenneth Robson also goes into the influence of Halford and the subsequent disputes that arose (still arise for some) from fishing a nymph.

I'd also recommend 'Gentlemen Preferred Dry Flies' The Dry Fly and the Nymph, Evolution and Conflict by William C. Black. Published last year it discusses influential angling figures from the UK (Ronalds, Stewart, Marryat, Halford, Sir Edward Grey, Skues etc) and subsequent developments in America (Norris, Gordon, La Branche, Hewitt etc). Has a good bibliography.

Overfield also put together a couple of books on flies some of which you don't see any more.

Look out for them if you are interested as they are inexpensive gems.

Blackers Art of Fly tying, Eric taverners Tying flies for Salmon, and his tying flies for trout, Scropes Days & nights of Salmon fishing, should give you all the history you need, easker 1
