The Longest Silence: A Life In Fishing by Thomas McGuane

One of the best books on (not how to) fishing that I have read. Highly recommended

Hi Bill,

I know we all have different views on so many things to do with fishing! So hope you don't mind me saying, that for me; it was a nondiscript American only style of fishing book; and a lot of salt! Not really my kind of book! But there again; I was not really a fan of "A River Never sleeps - by : Roderick Haig-Brown" I enjoyed reading the part where he returned to the UK to write about his childhood years; but the rest of the book did nothing for me!

There was also another book written by McGuane that I was not keen on; but cannot remember the name of it! Anyhow, my point was! His style of writing is not for everyone. Although, many regard his writing about fishing as some of the best you'll read! I'd rate him as just OK.

Read "Where The Bright Waters Meet" H Plunket Green, great book, well written.
Then read "A River Never Sleeps" Roderick Haig-Brown. Agree with Mostyn.
Can't get to grips with American writers. One exceptoin Lefty Kreh. Read articles by others, some mediocre at best. They seem to lack a certain something.

Where the bright waters meet!! A wonderful book to read. I also like Henry Williamson as a fishing author _ Salar the Salmon! A Clear Water Stream; and I know a lot of people don't like "The Compleat Angler"?? But it's my Favourite Book of all. There are lots of good books to be read, try " A Dream of Jewelled Fishes" By John Aston! He should have his new book out soon?

There are a few new British authors that I may read. But only a few of the American authors I like.

My Moby Dick by William Humphrey is an excellent little American book. Well worth a read and can be picked up pretty cheaply.

The Longest Silence is still on my reading list, I'm sure I'll get round to it soon though.

I agree with Mostyn.... I got 3/4 of the way through 'The longest silence' and i have not picked it back up since. To be honest i considered putting it down a number of times earlier on but kept thinking i would give it a chance.... Just didnt rate it at all... Personal choice.

As people say - personal taste.
I can't get on with Gierach, he writes well but for me, something is missing although I can't put my finger on what it is.

I purchased the longest silence a few years ago and I have tried to read it several times but just got kinda bored with it I was just reading it fior the sake of reading it and wasnt really enjoying it and just gave up, I was very surprised because it has been highly reccommended by many. Sorry! not for me.
