Default A Reference Book of English Trout Flies

By W H Lawrie

Is it worth buying?

Am a bit of a fly nut and have a few modern (?) day books which I enjoy referencing from time to time but not this one.

Wondering if it should be added to the collection.

What do yo think?

Cheers in advance.

I have this book by him.

BORDER RIVER ANGLING. Lawrie (W.H.). B001AW1M5O | All Fishing Books | Coch-y-Bonddu Books

I wrote this as a book review for my website but never put it up.

'For a book written in the late 1930’s there is a lot in it for the modern angler starting to fish on rivers. The book is broken down into various chapters covering nymphing and wet fly, dry-fly, worm and natural lures, minnow and night fishing. There is also a chapter on the life-history of river flies and a chapter on tackle.

The modern reader may find the writing a little archaic but the information still stands the test of time, although some of the scientific observations of the trout and naturals have obviously moved on.

A good book, a good read and a little bit of insight into the history of river fishing.
'

As I haven't read the book you are looking for I can only say I liked his style of writing and may be worth a look.

The book has just arrived and I am delighted with it. I've just flicked through quickly and have found a chapter on James Chetham (previously unknown to me) and thought I'd share this quote from the book.........

A curious mixture is James Chetham of Smedley, at once hard-headed, practical and shrewd, and yet revealing himself of plagiarism and something grim and credulous in his belief in the effacy of ointments containing ingredients more suited for a witch's kettle - "Man's fat" or "the powdered Bones or Skull of a dead Man"-than calculated to render irresistible to fish any bait annoited therewith.

This would bring any youngster a bit closer to fly tying and fly fishing me thinks!
