Default Tying Glass Bead Flies

by Joe J. Warren (US)

Anyone had their optics on this book? It gets quite good reviews in the US but as an instructional book that is pretty easy to do.

An original would cost £43.24 (1997) in paperback or £25.00 in hardback (1998) through the Jungle River people at today's prices.

Any FFF members read this or have it and just flicked through.

Comments would be great.

Thanks in advance

Loopy,

A member of my local Fly Dressers Guild likes to tie midges, buzzers and nymphs using glass beads, and he put me onto Joe Warren's book. I was fortunate to pick up a copy from Paul Morgan at Coch-y-Bonddhu for £15. It is not a thick book, so I would hesitate to pay the prices you quoted. That said, it is full of ideas and patterns for how to use glass beads in various types of flies. The first 25 or so pages are instructional, discussing materials, techniques and a series of SBSs of about 12 patterns. The rest of the book (30 pages) is basically pattern recipes for imitating various naturals and lures.

I was fishing at Avington fishery yesterday and the most successful flies were bloodworm and black+green buzzer patterns tied with glass beads and short rabbit hair tails. In clear water the translucency of the glass beads seems to make a difference.

Hope this helps, Dave

Interesting post Dave I'll look to buying one second hand. On the buzzers yesterday, were they glass bead head buzzers or buzzers with more than one bead that were catching?

Cheers

Loopy, The flies were tied with several beads. The red bloodworm pattern was tied on a B100 #10, while the black/green buzzer pattern was tied on a B100 #12. The head is a size larger opaque bead (#8) with the eye hand pained on. The body uses translucent beads( size #10s).

The quality of the photo is **** (my camera does not want to focus on the glass beads, probably operator error), but should give you some idea.

Dave

Didn't want it to be painful for you but have got the idea - Cheers. Used to fish Avington along time ago and loved it.

Thanks again for your response.
