In Radcliffe at the time of the signing of the magna carter, the kings monitors recorded a local game that had become very popular at Radcliffe Tower.
The games origins were unknown but before the tower was built a levy was demanded from a local landowner to anyone wishing to cross the ford over the Irwell. If the traveler could not pay his way the sheriff was said to make a wager that if he could kick them in the privates and the traveller could make it over the ford without falling then the fee would be waved.
This game of stamina carried on right upto the 1800s when the local population was at an all time low.

As a minor footnote, the game of cricket was also developed at Radcliffe, the inhabitants needing to find an alternative use for surplus stock at the nadger protector hire shops that lined the approaches to the ford.

Ellen Plowright, daughter of William Plowright and Elizabeth (unknown), was born in Derby, Derbyshire, circa 1841.

Ellen Plowright was married to Benjamin Henry Bull on Saturday, 6 April 1861 at St. Matthew's Church, Darley Abbey, Derbyshire.
