Oh oh I've got one........

Cods wallop

Origin unknown. First put in print 1963.

That is until now.

In Radcliffe at the time of the signing of the magna carter, the kings monitors recorded a local game that had become very popular at Radcliffe Tower.
The games origins were unknown but before the tower was built a levy was demanded from a local landowner to anyone wishing to cross the ford over the Irwell. If the traveler could not pay his way the sheriff was said to make a wager that if he could kick them in the privates and the traveller could make it over the ford without falling then the fee would be waved.
This game of stamina carried on right upto the 1800s when the local population was at an all time low.

Ah yes helpful and informative.

As a minor footnote, the game of cricket was also developed at Radcliffe, the inhabitants needing to find an alternative use for surplus stock at the nadger protector hire shops that lined the approaches to the ford.

Your thinkng of Les Procter, alchemist and philosopher to the old Earl of Bury. He once scribed, "the Radcliffe Cricket Game has three arms of virtue, holding aloft fair Ellen. The round ball of York spends all day trying to knock her off".

Fair Ellen

He was wasting his time if it was Ellen Plowright of 17 Moleturners Close. Branch Secretary of the Rug Turners and Carpet Grazers guild, she favoured a long handle 5oz bat with a soft rubber grip. Well known for getting gobbled up in Cow Corner, York would have had to bend his googly a long way from outside her leg stump.

Ellen Plowright
born circa 1841, died before April 1891
Ellen Plowright, daughter of William Plowright and Elizabeth (unknown), was born in Derby, Derbyshire, circa 1841.

Ellen Plowright was married to Benjamin Henry Bull on Saturday, 6 April 1861 at St. Matthew's Church, Darley Abbey, Derbyshire.

And that's no bull

Sounds like a load of glossop to me.

Fair Ellen was cooked in a pie by her step mother and served to her Father at Radcliffe hall/tower. He found out when he found her ring in the pie.
Now joking appart finding anyone's RING in a pie, even an animals must be something of a supprise.
