Default local fishing

There are lots of choices - Bradford City, Bradford No 1, Manchester Anglers, Waltonians, etc etc. Check out online and see which is handiest - I joined Bradford City because the Aire is near enough home to make a half-hour visit worthwhile, and they have other waters also. If you fancy stillwaters, there's Pennine fishery, Raygill, Fewston & Swinsty, etc etc all quite nearby.

Where in West yorskhire are you based?

I have got the Bradford City book for the rivers and also the Wakefiled book for very local fishing.
I tend to fish for alternative species on fly with the wakefiled book for a bit of a challenge.. Pike, perch, carp etc..

There is Walton Hall (waterton park) trout fishery off J39 of the M1.
Certain parts of the river Calder & Calder Hebble canal report regular brown trout and grayling being caught.

There are quite a lot of other places in west yorkshire.. Have a google and you should find quite a few..
Give me a shout if you get stuck as i once pulled all of the local fisheries onto a file and i am sure i can dig it out from the archives if needed !!

The Holme, Coln, Calder, Dearne, Don are all close by for Trout and Grayling fishing though some also contain course as well. I know that Brownies have been caught on the fly right outside Sheffield Wednesday's ground in the middle of that city. Salmon and Sea Trout we don't have that much unfortunately though things are getting better. I think the Yorkshire Esk on the North East coast is one of our jewels. Also the River Ribble though a lot of that is unfortunately in Lancashire If you're tempted to commit treason though you can also try the Lune for migratories.

You do get some Salmon and Sea Trout going up the Ure/Nidd/Swale. I also hear of them in the Wharf and extremely rarely in the Aire. I believe a Sea trout was recently caught in the Calder near Wakefield! Migratories on these rivers all seems to be kept very hush hush though

I have heard that they have stocked a lot of young Salmon fry into the Trent a few years ago in the hope of reviving that river back to being the Pristine Salmon river it was in Victorian times. Read more here: http://www.derbyshirebiodiversity.or..._the_Trent.pdf

Cheers,
John

Our local rivers are just starting to get game fish, a trip to the dales is going to be your best bet
Although there is some good reservoir fishing near to you, I'll send you a pm

Paul

Hi Kevin

I live in Denby Dale too and there is a nice section of the Don at Penistone run by the Salmon and Trout Association. I havn't joined this year but was a member for a few years. It is stocked occasionally and has a good head of small browns. 6-7 ft rods and #3-4 lines are order of the day. In addition there is Ingbirchworth reservoir about 5 mins away. Nice setting, natural, no stocking so wild browns only. Very and I mean very finicky and you won't go home with a fish every time. I'm off for my ticket tomorrow from Fly Only at Shelley. Nice people and 70.00 for the year, well it was last year. May have gone up a little.

Other than that there is Scout Dyke reservoir just further down than Ingbirchworth run by the Barnsley Trout club. Bait maggot, sweetcorn all apply. I stopped fishing this a while ago. North Yorkshire is ok and googling will produce the places. River Derwent in North Yorkshire has some lovely fit Browns, a bit dear but as a treat!!

I'm going to try out Malham Tarn this year, another moody water from what I have read but the scenery is stunning and you can hire a boat too. Finally there are the usual trout fisheries listed in the mags. By all means pm me if you want to know more.

Cheers, Ian

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to West Yorkshire. There is some cracking fishing available in the area, the rivers Calder, Colne and Holme offer excellent fishing at very reasonable cost. Halifax and Ryburn control some of the best Trout and Grayling fishing, tickets & year books available fron Jewsons in Halifax. Slaithwaite and District control some of the best water's on the Colne and Holme, no day tickets, year book's available from Chris Roberts Tackle in Huddersfield. There is also good stillwater fishing for Brown Trout in a stunning location with Rippoden Fly Fishers, visit their web-site for futher details.
If you want any further info please feel free to drop me a PM.

Welcome to West Yorkshire. I'm based in Huddersfield the stillwaters I've fished are Raygill, Walton Hall, Kilnsey Park and Windybank Fly Fishers at Meltham Mill. I don't fish rivers because of my disability but our window cleaner does and tells me there is some great trout waters in the area and he's had browns up to 5lbs.
