Default Rolled wing olive/old fashioned winging method

I now understand why this method of winging went out of fashion. Although it does not require matched wing quills it certainly eats up feathers! Also no easier to produce a good wing than useing the accepted matched quills.

What is it you're rolling? I've only ever used it on fine fibres like bronze mallard or teal.

The rolled wing method is best used with feathers that have very little web and therefore will not hold together as well as the primary feathers from say a Mallard wing.

Teal is one of the most difficult to work with as a slip wing but when rolled gives a good effect. Yes you can make wings out of paired slips of teal flank but unless you have the whole bird getting a matched pair of feathers is difficult and they do fall apart very easily. It is a difficult technique that I would only attempt for a "show case" fly, for fishing flies it is unnecessary.

Cheers
