The DHE is a truely great fly. If I was to be restricted to only ever fishing one fly, the DHE would be it, I think. Also, once you have tied a few, they are pretty easy to knock out.

I was fishing a hill reservoir last week and the trout were hammering my DHEs. I had one fly that had taken about a dozen fish and even with the body stripped off by their teeth, the fish were still hitting it.

Here is an excellent SBS by Hans Weilenmann

I have found that the most important thing is getting the proportions right. Too long a wing and the fly coups over on its side. A nice spikey thorax in front of the wing is also very desirable. I generally use Hares Mask, but am currently experimenting with squirrel. The abdomen can be just about anything, but I like rabbit dubbing as it aids the all important sinking of the body. My favourite variation uses Hare's mask underfur.

Here is a link to a couple of more pictures off Hans's site. These were tied by Bob Wyatt who developed this fly. Again notice the proportions.

The only other tip I would add is to use Blacktail deer for the wing. I think Bob recommends Roe, but I have found the Blacktail a better option.

Finally, that is a great photo.
