Default Marble Trout

Just got back from a week's fishing in Slovenia with some friends. We had lots of fish - browns, rainbows and grayling but the best of the lot was catching marble trout, a species unique to rivers flowing into the Adriatic.

This guy

lives under the branch of the tree on the right in this pic and he eats Elk-hair Caddis. You can see him fighting just ahead of where my line enters the water. The other fish hugging the bottom are rainbows

This little fella

lives behind the big square-ish rock at the head of this pool and eats the same flies as his bro downstream

They are pretty fish and I really enjoyed the opportunity of catching some. Like Arnie said, 'I'll be back.'

What fish and what surroundings to catch them in!

Where in Slovenia were you? - here's a marble I got from the Soca last year - I can't wait to get back but not this year unfortunately.

Steve, I fished the Soca, Unica, Radovna, Idrija and Sava Bohinjka, all of 'em were great

One thing I'll remember next time is to bring a bigger net, a couple of those rainbows could barely get their heads into mine!

Did you have many fish on dries? - there was very little dry fly action when I was there (early May) but I heard that June/July can be a problem with snowmelt.

Steve, most of my fish were on dries - Elk Hair Caddis, CDC & Elk and Klinks were most popular. What surprised me a little was the fly size - anything under a 10 was too small although on reflection, when fishing those fast rocky streams, a larger fly does make sense

The exception was on the Unica where I think the fish were 'educated' and very pernickety and smaller flies seemed to work better. One of the guys I was with spent half an hour on one rainbow and finally nailed it on a #24 midge

With you on the net - mine was the biggest in our little group of friends and was much in demand!
