Default Powan

One day on Carron Valley Reservoir, way back in the 1990s, long before digital cameras, I landed 2 powan. My boat partner also had one that day, and my boat partner on a club outing caught one around that time. To this day, they are the only ones I have been in the company of. Beautiful fish, with very silvery flanks and a dark green back. They were introduced to Carron I believe as a result of concern over the future of the native population in Loch Lomond following pike anglers discarding unwanted ruffe live bait into the water, and the ruffe flourishing and eating the powans' eggs and fry.

Powan programme

The Lomond fish only go a pound or so at best, but a lot of the Carron fish are 2 lb class. It is a protected species and an offence to capture it intentionally.

Anyroad, we had a club outing to Carron last week, and one of our boats landed 2 and another boat landed 5. Surely worth throwing them in jail for that?

John Levy had his camera with him and he got this shot of one of the 5...

I should stress that all 7 powan were safely returned to the water.

I've been fishing Carron Valley for 30years from boat and bank ( before bank fishing was allowed ) and up until last week had only caught 1 powan! I've fished it 3 times in the last week and have between my boat partners and i, Jock Royan and Dave Bonnington, landed no less than 16 Powan. These have ranged in weight from 1lb to just over 2lb est. Why the explosion in these fish? i thought it was mainly down to a change in fishing methods but i've had 2 pulling small lures( and pulling sharpish) the rest have fell to nymphs and buzzers. We covered risers which alot were Powan and not one took the fly. We've also had them in 3 different areas/bays. Lovely fish but come in pretty tamely.

Been fishing carron for 40 years and only caught my first Powan this year. My fishing partner has had a few over the years and it seems there has been a bit of a population explosion recently in the Powan. I have no idea why this might be but could it be to do with the introduction of Rainbow Trout to the water causing some indirect effect?
