it's a bullhead - odd head colouration for one mind!

Aye, when I were a lad, the Gogar Burn was liftin' with them. Wonder if they are still there? We called them "beardies". No idea why, coz I don't think they have any barbules. Or do they? The name maybe got accidentally transferred from stone loach?

No barbules on a bullhead Col. Gogar burn used to be stuffed with them when were were laddies, yet there were none in the Water of Leith at that time...plenty of Loach though (beardies).Once the bullheads got into to the Wol they seemed to completely take over the niche that the beardies had in that river. The little perishers seem to be under every stone that I turn over in the river now. They will make short work of trout ova for sure, they have a huge mouth for such a little fish.

Aye, they are a major pest and even though they are not natives to Scottish rivers they are a protected species as they are on the European Endangered species list.

I remember well the spread of them through the WoL, think they came down the Longstone burn when the Union Canal was drained at Westerhailes. I reckon that the Bullheads in the canal probably come from the Gogar burn. They are also found in the Almond, probably via the canal. I’ve no idea where they came from in the first place and how they got into the Gogar?

Once had a 1½lb troot out of the Gogar – it was a great wee burn at one time

That's because they all had tape worms

Have you been up there recently Jimmy? Is it all Pike now or are there some trout left?
