Default Iceland

I'd never been to Iceland, but it certainly held appeal, and why wouldn't it, it is, after all, one of the angling Meccas of the game fishing world.

In July/August I was lucky enough to visit, but not just visit; this was going to be a tour! I was to circumnavigate the whole island! Taking in several fishing spots as I did. As you can imagine not much thinking time was spent deliberating whether to go or not...

I passed the kind offer on to a friend of mine, as I had decided to go chub fishing instead. Yeah right!

Bags packed I was off.

The tour started on the South of the island taking in some trout streams, sea-trout streams and and some very low salmon rivers. The trout fishing was 'ok', but it was great to catch up with an old friend that was fishing there at the time. The sea-trout fishing; dull! They claimed that the river was the best in Europe for the numbers and size of its sea-trout. Put bluntly; boll@ks! And even if it did produce such runs it presented quite miserable fishing opportunities - to such an extent I didn't even photograph it! There was, however, some decent brown-trout fishing, which were overlooked. Some good sport followed one windless evening, but it was soon on to the next location.

Disaster! Spate river + no water. There were a few fish held up in the sea pool, but the run above was quite literally an inch deep. No fish would enter the main system. Waste of time. Next.

By this time I was getting rather despondent; if this was all the great 'Iceland' had to offer then quite simply it could keep it. The rest of the trip, however, was just fantastic, I’m glad to report. I visited the Jokla, Breidalsa, then ended the trip on the Midfjardara, which was just awesome!

Here are some shots from the trip:

HI Teifi,

I was in Iceland in July this year, and we had an incredible year, the best so far in fact. between 6 rods we had 107 salmon in 4 days, with my personal tally 30 fish! there were also some wonderful sea trout to 5lb, and arctic char to around 4lb fairly common! I've got some lovely shots i;d love to share, but don't know how to upload them onto this site. theyre email attachments at the moemnt??

Anyone have any ideas?

Wow, do you not get fed up with the trips?

And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Hi BB,

I just upload them to photobucket and import them from there. 2 useful programmes/sites:

I use this one to resize quickly:
http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize

Then host on here:
http://photobucket.com/

I believe that the flyforums site does have their own server now, but you're limited to 20 uploads a day, which isn't the best for click happy people like myself!

Where were you fishing? Some rivers really suffered this year whilst others were just on fire!

t1978d; yeah, it really sucks! I am actually thinking about becoming an accountant instead, just have to learn to count and I'm there! In all seriousness though; it's always good to be home, and there's a lot to be said about what's on your own doorstep.

TT.

You again

Wicked stuff Steffan. Thanks for posting. Brings back a few memories from summer 2003.....it was that hot here I flew out of Heathrow in me shorts and t-shirt... I'll wrap up warm when we land. Bu99er me, on arrival at Reykjavik I was suitably attired in me shorts... temperatures in the high 70's

The temps stayed high for our first 3 days on the 'Mini', so high that I was seriously uncomfortable in my breathables and had to hot-foot it back to the lodge on the first morning to gear up with shorts and flip-flops. Great for my upper body comfort, but not so great for my feet and legs... the Mini was, errrr, COLD! Could only manage 2 or 3 minutes at a time in the water before there was a serios danger of frostbite setting in! The cold didn't stop the fish rising to the dries though

Temps and sky returned to a 'seasonal norm' of 50 degrees, drizzle and low cloud after day 3 when we moved on to the Tungelaekur and Grenlaekur.

Was that very first shot on your post taken on the 'Mini' ? Near the lodge with a picture of Paxman on the wall?

Keep 'em coming Steffan. Where you off next?

I'm an accountant and believe me it's worth it, who needs amazing landscapes and excellent fishing when you have a spreadsheet. Where's your next trip, and what is your dream destination?

Hey Scratch,

thanks for the post and for the image. Yes! it was on the Mini, and it looks be near enough in exactly the same place as your image was taken!

The Mini was 'ok', but I think, from what my friends were telling me, it was the wrong (or poor) time of the year - they usually go much earlier.

How did you find the Tungeleakur? Did you get some nice sea-trout? To be honest I didn't like it that much.

Where am I off next?! Doing a fair bit of shooting now, and hope to get out for some grayling soon. Next 'exotic' trip will be in February, back down for my annual trip to Argentina/Chile, which I'm really looking forward to. Not sure where I'm going this time, but really fancy taking in more of Chile, as I have tended to concentrate on Argentina. We'll see.

TT.

Hi T1978D,

probably back to S.America, chasing the winter sun! Dream destination; to be honest the trip to Bolivia would have to come close, it was quite simply amazing. A dream destination for me can be as much about the overall experience as it is the fishing. I really want to battle a GT though, and NZ is definitely on the bucketlist!

Hey rrw35,
good to hear from you mate. Nope, not a TCX in sight. Had my trusty airflo airlights in 10ft and 13ft, then just a bog standard stremtec in 9ft #4 for the lighter work. Covered me well for the trip.
