The consensus of opinion from elsewhere is that this is a Philopotamus montanus speckled sedge but the yellow spotted sedge has also been mentioned. On checking there seems to be some authorities giving them both the same genus name and others giving a different genus for the speckled sedge. It all seems to be a mess

Anyone with any thoughts about it?

I'd concur that you almost certainly have philopotamus montanus there Fishtales.

The only other possible that I can find would be polycentropus flavomaculatus, but I believe this occurs later in the season.......

Nice shots.

I should have said. It was photographed in May in Moidart. The grass and heather was full of them but they were beside a small stream a little bit away from the loch.

Right click on the picture and save it too your desktop, not copy, and view it with Irfanview, if you click on Information/Exif and look at the bottom you will see a button to view in Google Earth. If you click on this and have Google Earth installed it will open, double click on the pin or the entry in Temporary Places and it will take you to where the picture was taken
