You can get some pretty good results with your average point and click digital however for really good pictures I wouldn't want anything lense than a decent DSLR. I own a Nikon but both the Nikon and Canon range are fairly equal.

Most importantly you need a good eye and understanding of what makes a good picture. You could have the best kit in the world but if you don't have the above you'll be wasting your time.

Hi Stuartp,

I use a Nikon D300 with either a 17-55mm f2.8 or 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens. The combination of a great body with remarkable results at high ISO and good quality lenes gives me IMO great results. The results straight out of the camera are great which means I don't have to spend ages in front of a PC processing them and I always shoot in RAW format.
I have used Nikon for years and wouldn't change to a different brand, I'm sure Canon users would say the same.

I took these photos on a drive through Glencoe in mid July 07 from the car window with a Canon IXUS 700 just pointing and shooting on automatic

My next camera will definitely be a Canon DSLR

I totally agree about the person behind the lens comments, my son is doing photography GCSE and even before he started that he got consistantly better results than me.
I bought a Lumix TZ3 a few months ago and am fairly happy with that, but everytime I see a really good DSLR picture it makes me want one, but for the portabilty I stopped short last time and got the Lumix instead.

These were taken with my Nikon D50 and a 300mm lens from a pitching boat in New Zealand last year.

DSLRs are more versatile than compacts, because you can change the lens etc. That's not to say you can't take good pictures with a compact.

You can tell very little about the quality of a camera (or more likely, a lens) from low resolution images on an internet forum.

Here's some pic taken with a Nikon D40 I recently got, DSLRs are a lot more versatile than normal cameras. You can't really go wrong with either Nikon or Canon, they are both quite similar.

This season I just started using the olympus 1030sw underwater camera. It's a 10mega pixel, point and shoot, however it's waterproof to 30'{approx. 10m}, and impact resistant from a drop of 5'{approx 1.5m}. It has a truly remarkable macro mode that for a Point and shoot, is stellar.

This camera is fun.

Here's some images I captured with it on one of my river excursions where we camp on islands in the river, and get to them by means of kayak.
