Default End of the season is nigh.

The trees are turning, the days are drawing in and theres a definite nip in the air.Its a nice time of year to be out and about but the best of the trout fishing is over for another year.Thought I would take the chance to have one last shot at my club water before the end of the season.

Not a great day for fishing it has to be said.....bright and breezy. The wind dropped a little late in the day but most of the fish I caught came from the sheltered margins (ahead of the geese). The fish were quietly sipping food items in amongst the floating leaf litter and were often swimming in less than a foot of water. They would take small dark coloured dries nae bother providing that I never spooked them with the boat or with a bad cast.I simply love ambushing fish in this manner.

It was neccesary to rest the water after I had hooked one in such a quiet shallow area.So I would nip away and have a pull on the Di-3 every coupla fish to give the fish a bit of time to regain their confidence and resume feeding. These flies worked well out in the waves.

Most of the fish I caught were stockie browns which had probably been in the water since early season. The rainbows seemed very out of sorts,I only managed a few of those.

I was astounded by the amount of jam in this donut...just had to take a snap....

With visions of Frankie Vaughns "Classic" ... in the back of my mind ,I was treated to this view of the boats bathed in moonlight.

Beautiful set of pictures, especially that last one.

And yes, that is a hell of a lot of jam for a doughnut.

Nice set of pics there Jim. I love the look of those shallows, both the tree lined shore and the swampy, lichen covered area, very fishy looking. That wee broonie wanted that GG and no mistake. Cheers for sharing, and for making me a bit jealous I'm not up there.

Aye it has to be a really bad day up there not to find at least some fish, sniffing around the surface. There is very little in the way of aquatic grub for them, so they tend to look skywards for their next meal. Those margins were the only bit of shelter on the loch that day and as luck would have it they were also acting as a collection zone for small terrestrials blown onto the water by the gusty wind.
There was a fair amount of leaf litter floating on the surface in that wee quiet corner and, usually where you have leaf litter there will also be some goodies for the trout in amongst it.

Some of the rise forms were hardly noticeable, little noses barely breaking the surface, tiny swirls shifting a leaf or two.....very subtle.Very spooky as well, one wrong move and the fish would dissappear.
Some of the fish were just inches away from the shoreline in less than a foot of water on little patrol routes. If they didnt spot the fly when I first laid it in their path they would usually find it on the way back......I love it....
