Default Arctic Char in Greenland

Been meaning to post a few pics since I got back from a wonderful trip to the Kangia river in South West Greenland at the beginning of September.

Unfortunately I got water in the camera, so quality is not the best in some of them.

Never been take to the backing so many times.......awesome fighting fish

Bill, that looks stunning. An Arctic Char trip is on my list of trips to do in the next 2-3 years. I wanted to have a couple of days in northern labrador when I was there in August but I couldn't pull myself away from the big Brookies. Did you go on an organised trip or did you go by yourself? I'd be interested to know some more details. Did you get chance to fish for any sea-run Char?

Went with my pal Willie and we set it all up ourselves, took a bit of effort but it wasn't too difficult. We looked at a few organised trips but found all of them eager to take your money but very unsresponsive to our enquiries on details, so we went it alone in the end.
You can only fly in with SAS via Rekyavik or Air Grenland via Copenhagen, we opted for the Copenhagen route as timings were better and we could get pretty cheap BA flights (booking well in advance). Whichever route, the fights into Greenland and internally are the expensive part and you can't avoid them.

Flew to Copenhagen on BA, overnight stop then Air Greenland to Kangerlussuaq (ex-US airbase on South-West edge of ice cap). Then Air Greenland to Maniitsoq (island off South-West coast). From there, small fast boat to Kangia Fjord.....bit of a rough ride as weather was ropey.

The hut we stayed in is in one of the pics above, basic but warm, dry and functional. There was just Willie, myself and Claudio a nice Italian guy we met in Maniitsoq who had booked through a UK tour operator . We had a local lady as a cook/guide (who couldn't cook) and her neice who was there to keep her company. So whole river between 3 of us fishing.

We did get quite a few fresh sea-run fish (awesome power) but it's better for them earlier in the season (late July/early August).

All C&R with the exception of those you want to eat whilst you are there......and they are absolutely delicious
On the return trip we opted for a 13 hour layover in Kangerlussuaq instead of the overnight in Copenhagen, to take a tour up onto the icecap.

If you want more detailed info, PM me and I will provide.

Lousy picture, but some of the other wildlife - Arctic Hares

Those are cracking fish.

Greenland looks surprisingly like Scotland in late autumn.
